SEATTLE — For the second straight game, Rilke Rutenbeck came through in the clutch for the Port Townsend girls basketball team.
Rutenbeck hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Redskins a 31-30 win over Seattle Academy on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class 1A Tri-District tournament.
Rutenbeck, a senior, scored the last three points of Port Townsend’s 33-30 win over Charles Wright on Saturday in the Tri-District play-in game.
Rutenbeck and Jewel Johnson led the Redskins with nine points each.
Port Townsend advances to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Redskins face fifth-ranked King’s on Thursday at Lynnwood High School at 4:30 p.m.
Neah Bay boys, girls win
PORT ANGELES — The Red Devils’ boys and girls teams opened the Class 1B Tri-District tournament with victories in a Tuesday night doubleheader at Port Angeles High School.
Ryan Moss hit four third-quarter 3-pointers in the opener as the top-ranked Neah Bay boys pulled away in the second half, beating Lummi 72-64.
The Red Devils face Cedar Park Christian (Mountlake Terrace) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon Christian High School.
The fifth-ranked Neah Bay girls topped Tulalip Heritage 80-34 in the nightcap.
The Red Devils used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to turn a 29-27 lead into a 41-27 advantage.
Neah Bay only built on its lead thereafter, holding the Hawks to 11 second-half points.
Cierra Moss led the Red Devils with 30 points.
Neah Bay advances to face Muckleshoot on Thursday at Mount Vernon Christian High School at 6 p.m.
