Crescent girls win a pair of games; Forks boys bounce back with win

SEQUIM — The Sequim girls basketball team got big games again from Gracie Chartraw and Jolene Vaara to run away from North Kitsap in the second half 56-40.

The Wolves were up just 26-22 at the half, but rode a 15-4 third quarter to cruise in the second half.

Chartraw led the Wolves with 23 points. “She was really aggressive on both offense and defense,” said coach Joclin Julmist.

Vaara had a great all-around game with 16 points, 10 steals, six assists, five rebounds and three blocks.

“It was a good test the girls. They worked hard for the win,” Julmist said.

Dani Herman led the team with six rebounds, while Bobbi Mixon had seven points. Libby Turella added five points and three steals.

“She [Turella] did a lot of things that didn’t show up in the books. She was everywhere getting her hands on everything,” Julmist said.

With the win, the Wolves remain tied for second in the Olympic League.

Sequim (2-1, 2-1) played at Anacortes on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves play again at Neah Bay at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Forks 56, Raymond 42

FORKS — The Forks boys basketball team bounced back from a tough loss against Ilwaco to beat a big Raymond team 56-42 on Friday.

“This really proved we’re not the same team as last year,” said coach Keith Weekes. “They were upset with themselves [after the Ilwaco game].”

Weekes said Raymond is a solid team that beat defending league champion Chief Leschi last week. With the victory, Forks remains all alone in second place in the Pacific 2B League.

Weekes said Raymond had a big 6-foot-7 post player who did alter some shots, but the Spartans were able to get him in foul trouble and take advantage.

Weekes said the Spartans have a tendency to settle for 3-pointers, but in this game, his players drove the lane and attacked the rim, to the point that they actually got called for nine charging fouls.

“I’m pretty proud of our guys. They really put their heads down. They didn’t let [the charging calls] get in their heads.”

The Spartans were led by Aidan Salazar, who had 19 points, while Brody Lausche had 11.

Forks (3-1, 6-3) plays at Coupeville on Tuesday and then takes a long break until Jan. 3 for the Christmas holiday.

North Kitsap 81, Sequim 49

SEQUIM — The league-leading North Kitsap boys basketball team got off to a hot start, then finished the game with a flourish in an 81-49 win over Sequim.

The Wolves actually played the Vikings pretty tough in the second and third quarters, but the Vikings built up a double-digit lead with a 23-6 first quarter, then went on a 19-0 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Wolves got within six points in the second quarter and stayed within 15-18 points for much of the game against the No. 2-ranked Vikings.

After North Kitsap’s big first quarter, the Wolves cut into the lead with a Keenan Green 3-pointer, a Lars Wiker 3-pointer and a second Green trey to make the score 27-21 for North Kitsap. The Vikings responded with a 13-0 run and the Wolves were never able to get the lead below double digits afterward.

Green led the Wolves with 11, while Charlie Grider had eight, Jamison Gray seven, and Mason Rapelje and Ethan Melnick six each.

Sequim (0-3, 3-3) has played three of the toughest teams in the Olympic League — Bainbridge, Bremerton and North Kitsap — to start league play. The Wolves take a two-week break and next play Dec. 29 at Meridian.
