SEQUIM — Anacortes’ stifling man-to-man defense limited Sequim to just 21.3 percent shooting offensively (10-for-47), rolling off a 50-30 nonleague win in the Wolves’ season opener on Wednesday.

“Tough loss. We have to regroup and get ready for Kingston,” coach Joclin Julmist said. “Anacortes is a pretty good team. Congratulations to them.”

Bobbi Mixon led the way with 11 points, five steals and three assists for Sequim.

Gracie Chartraw posted 10 points, three rebounds and a pair of steals.

“Libby Turella had a solid game with five points, nine rebounds and three steals,” Julmist said.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Spartans overcame a slow start and some rough free-throw shooting to beat the Rivals for the second time in three days.

“First road game of the season, and it showed at the beginning,” Forks coach Keith Weekes said.

“That’s the joy of playing the exact same team two days apart. [East Jefferson] were ready for what they saw in the first game. We got the chance to slow things down and work the ball in.

“First half was physical. Bodies were slamming, guys were getting hit, good, old-school basketball game.

“At halftime, nobody was whining about no-calls. They came out and kept playing basketball. We switched from man to zone defense and threw a three-quarter-court soft press and it disrupted them.”

Titus Rowley continued his strong start with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Brody Lausche added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Bubba Hernandez had nine points and four steals, while Kyle Lohrengel filled up the stat sheet with nine points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Traycen Brown and freshman Luke O’Hara each scored 13 points to lead East Jefferson.

Rivals head coach Adam Washburn was pleased with the team’s opening 12 minutes of play.

“Our team defensive effort and overall effort was monumentally better than Monday night,” Washburn said. “We were limiting them on the offensive glass much better than we did.

“In the third quarter, they switched into zone and it changed the rhythm of the game.”

Forks (2-0) hosts Coupville on Monday.

East Jefferson (0-2) visits Charles Wright tonight.
