PREP BASKETBALL: Sequim girls snap losing streak, stay in playoff chase

SEQUIM — The Sequim girls basketball team got 18 points from Adrienne Haggerty as the Wolves snapped a five-game losing streak and kept their hopes alive for a postseason berth with a 44-32 win over Kingston.

Ella Christiansen also scored nine, and the Wolves had good balance in Tuesday’s game, getting five points each from Bobbi Sparks, Madison Green and Jessica Dietzman.

The Wolves (6-10, 4-6) likely have to win out to make Districts. Port Angeles (5-4) and Kingston (5-5) are in front of Sequim for the final playoff slot.

The victory sets up a very important game Friday night with postseason implications for both teams between rivals Sequim and Port Angeles in Port Angeles. That game begins at 5:15 p.m.

Quilcene 57, Pope John Paul II 27

QUILCENE — Quilcene beat Pope John Paul II 57-27, staying in good position to make the Sea-Tac 1B League Tournament.

The Rangers got 16 points each from Abby Weller and Allison Jones. Weller had her best offensive game of the year and a great all-around game with six rebounds, four steals and four assists.

“The entire roster got to get in on this one and that helps make it more fun for the girls,” said coach Brianna Weller.

“It was nice to see all the girls get some substantial minutes to help grow their games and reward them for their hard work in practice,” she said.

The win puts Quilcene at 5-4 in the Sea-Tac 1B (10-6 overall), tied for sixth place with Northwest Yeshiva. The top eight teams in the league go the league tourney that begins Feb. 6.

Quilcene has a very important game against Northwest Yeshiva at 6 p.m. today on the road.

Chimacum 56, Port Angeles JV 31

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys got 18 points from Jada Trafton and 15 from consistent scorer Mechelle Nisbet in beating the Roughriders JV.

“I thought that we played well especially when sharing the ball with one another. We were extremely unselfish and I loved the ball movement and the willingness to make the extra pass. I think this is a true testament to the type of team we have,” said Chimacum coach Trevor Hungtinford of Tuesday’s game.

Grace Yaley also scored 11 for the Cowboys. Freshman Delaney Wenzl scored 11 for the Port Angeles JV. Huntingford said the team tallied a lot of assists.

Chimacum (9-8, 2-4) plays an Olympic League 1A Division game on the road at 5 p.m. Friday against first-place Coupeville.

“I like the way we’ve been playing and I’m looking forward to a strong finish if we keep our minds sharp and grabbing a playoff berth,” Huntingford said.

Boys Basketball Kingston 64, Sequim 47

KINGSTON — Playing without leading scorer Payton Glasser due to a knee ligament sprain, the Wolves lost to the Buccaneers 64-47 on the road.

Nate Despain hit three 3-pointers and scored 21 for the Wolves, adding five rebounds. Riley Cowan had five points and seven rebounds.

“Nate has been playing extremely well for us of late,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.

“We are asking him to not only score for us, but to defend some of the better players we face and bring the ball up court. “That’s a lot on his plate, but he is handling it well and loves doing it.”

Sequim (0-10, 2-14) next plays at 7 p.m. Friday in Port Angeles against the Roughriders.
