YAKIMA — The final score ended up misleading, as the Port Angeles boys basketball team was within five points of the No. 2-ranked Zillah Leopards at the Yakima SunDome Tournament.
Zillah finished the final 4½ minutes on a 13-0 run to pull away for a 61-43 win.
Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin was proud of how the Roughriders played against a team that has won four 1A state championships in the past decade.
“Zillah was a perfect team for us to play this time of year,” Ulin said. “I’m really proud of our guys. They competed and battled. Our defense in the half court was the best we’ve had all year.”
The Riders were down just 24-21 at the half when Zillah hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to take a six-point lead into the break. Ulin said that shot seemed to give the Leopards a lot of moment. Zillah went on a 10-2 run in the third quarter with Port Angeles’ big inside players Tyler Hunter and Isaiah Shamp in foul trouble to take a big lead.
The Riders responded with a 7-0 run in the fourth to cut the score to 48-43, but the Leopards were able to finish the game strong.
Shamp led the Riders with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Parker Nickerson had 15 points and Hunter nine as only three Port Angeles players scored.
The game also featured the first game of the year by Port Angeles’ Josiah Long.
The Riders played Friday against Toppenish, another very tough 1A team that actually beat North Kitsap at the SunDome on Thursday. The results of that game will be on www.peninsuladaily news.com.
Port Angeles (4-0, 6-2) returns to Olympic 2A League play Tuesday on the road against league powerhouse North Kitsap in a battle for first place.
“We knew this stretch of games were going to be difficult,” Ulin said.
