JOYCE — The Crescent Loggers stood toe-to-toe with the No. 2-ranked eight-man football team in the state, hanging with the undefeated Lummi Blackhawks well into the second half.

The Blackhawks scored two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away for a win 48-22 on Saturday, but Crescent coach Brian Shimko couldn’t be more proud of his team, which was missing three seniors and had to start several sophomores on the offensive and defensive lines.

“I was super impressed with how well the young kids played. It’s looking good for the future,” Shimko said. “We’re getting better and better. I was super happy with the results.”

The Loggers tallied more than 370 yards on the ground and 430 yards of total offense.

Wyatt Lee led the Loggers as usual with 207 yards gained on 28 carries, but Brayden Emery also had a big game. Emery ran 11 times for 117 yards and had six receptions for 61 yards, which included a 39-yard pass play that just missed being a touchdown. Emery also scored a two-point conversion.

Lee had touchdown runs of 38, 22 and 1 yards and a two-point conversion.

The Loggers were tied 14-14 with the Blackhawks near the end of the first half, but Lummi went into the half with the advantage after a 42-yard touchdown pass with no time left on the clock.

Lummi built the lead up to 32-14, but early in the fourth quarter, Lee scored his third touchdown. After a two-point conversion, the Loggers were still within striking distance at 32-22. The Blackhawks were able to put the game away with two TDs and two two-point conversions in the final few minutes.

Weston Hart also had 48 yards rushing on 16 carries, and he passed for 63 yards.

The Loggers (3-2) have their third tough game in the row, going to Neah Bay (2-2) to play the Red Devils at 7 p.m. Friday.
