PREP FOOTBALL: Missing three starters, Red Devils get past Loggers 68-16

Quilcene wins to move to 5-1

JOYCE — Missing three veteran starters on offense and defense to injury, the Neah Bay football team put star running back Jodell Wimberly in at quarterback and got a big game from freshman Caleb Cummins in beating Crescent 68-16.

Wimberly threw two touchdown passes and ran for 163 yards and three more touchdowns, while Cummings ran 14 times for 184 yards and three touchdowns.

In all, Neah Bay tallied 440 yards rushing.

Adan Ellis had a 50-yard run and a 30-yard catch for a touchdown, while Seactis Woodruff had a receiving touchdown and a running touchdown.

Cummins also led the team in tackles with 11.

“For Neah Bay, I felt we played them pretty well,” said Crescent coach Brian Shimko. “I felt like we left three touchdowns on the field. We marched up and down the field, but they stopped on us fourth down a lot.”

Wimberly was forced to play quarterback because Mathias Greene is out with a hamstring injury and backup QB Makyah Chambers is also hurt.

“It was an easy decision. He’s an athletic, smart kid. He’s a playmaker and he definitely made some plays,” said coach TJ Greene.

The Red Devils were also without Tyler Swan, a big part of the offense from the fullback position.

“Caleb is really coming on strong. He definitely had a good offseason and he’s starting to trust his teammates,” Greene said.

Neah Bay (6-0, 6-1) next hosts Lummi (0-5, 0-5) at 5 p.m. Friday and then has a huge game at home on Oct. 25 against Tulalip Heritage, which is undefeated.

For the Loggers, Dom Sprague led the team with 68 yards on 16 carries, while Josh Bersom had 61 yards on six carries, including a 55-yard touchdown run up the middle.

Mikah Love had two catches for 39 yards, including a 33-yard catch on a pass from Bersom.

Quarterback Henry Bourm was 10-for-16 for 65 yards. Bersom finished with seven catches for 54 yards, including a 10-yard catch for another touchdown.

Crescent (2-3, 3-3) will next play at Charles Wright (2-4, 2-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in a game that will be important for the Loggers to remain in playoff contention.

Quilcene 51, Evergreen Lutheran 16

TACOMA — Quilcene got a touchdown from Isaac Figueroa on the opening kickoff and never looked back, scoring 34 points in the first quarter in a 51-16 over Evergreen Lutheran.

Figueroa had two straight kickoff returns for touchdowns against Muckleshoot Tribal and Evergreen Lutheran.

The starters for Quilcene only ran 16 plays as the Rangers dominated the first three quarters. They were helped by getting great field position repeatedly on three interceptions. Tyler Matheson had a 28-yard interception return, Tyler Wills a 15-yard interception return and Robert Evans a 42-yard INT return.

“We played pretty well defensively,” said coach Trey Beathard. “Every kid played and got to play a lot. It was a good day.”

Mason Iverson led the team with 110 yards on three cares. He scored two touchdowns, including one on an 87-yard run.

Andrew Perez-Lopez had a 43-yard touchdown run and two touchdown passes to Wills and Taylor Boling.

Tyler Beukes had a 37-yard touchdown run and gained 59 yards on two carries. Evans ran three times for 36 yards, while Taylor Boling kicked a 25-yard field goal and made six extra points.

Iverson led the team with seven tackles while Taylor Boling had six.

Quilcene (5-1, 5-1) has a big game at home for homecoming at 1 p.m. Saturday against Darrington (3-2, 3-3), looking for revenge against a team that beat the Rangers last year.

Annie Wright 35, East Jefferson 7

TACOMA — Other than a pair of mistakes that gave Annie Wright 14 points, the East Jefferson Rivals football squad played the Gators tough in a 35-7 Saturday loss.

“We coughed up the ball for a score and let them return a kick for a TD,” said coach Tony Haddenham.

Haddenham said the defense played great, getting eight total stops either through turnovers, turnovers on downs and punts. They also got a 50-yard scoop and score from Alex Garcia on a fumble.

“Our defense was pretty good,”Haddenham said. “That was our best game defensively all year.” Tyler Martin led the team with 12 tackles and a quarterback sack.

“He was all over the place,” Haddenham said.

Silas Morford and Garcia each had six tackles, while Luke O’Hara and Jameson Henery each had four. Adam Weaver had a quarterback sack.

Offensively, Morford had 55 yards rushing and hit Henery for a 54-yard pass play. Jackson Dupuy also rushed for 27 yards.

East Jefferson (0-4, 0-6) will next play a 2B team, Raymond-South Bend (1-5) in South Bend at 7 p.m. Friday.
