NEAH BAY — The Red Devils (3-0) have beaten an opponent ranked in the state’s Associated Press poll twice in as many weeks after outlasting the Blackhawks 64-56 in a wild nonleague game between league opponents.
Neah Bay also beat Quilcene 60-39 last Saturday.
“It was a little bit sloppy. There was a lot of offense and a lot of mistakes,” said Red Devils head coach TJ Greene. “These games are normally a defensive battle. There wasn’t much defense in this game.”
Toby Croy gained 344 yards rushing on 33 carries. He ended up with five touchdown runs, including a 70-yarder and a 54-yarder. He also caught three passes for 82 yards, giving him 416 yards from scrimmage.
“The offensive line played really great,” Greene said. “Tobias Croy did a good job running inside. Lummi came prepared to shut down his outside runs.”
Much of the Friday’s scoring was in the second quarter, when the two teams combined for 58 total points after a slow start to the game in the first quarter.
The Red Devils overcame four touchdown passes and three rushing touchdowns by the Blackhawks’ Caleb Revey, who had a hand in every Lummi score.
“That kid is a class act. He’s certainly a challenge to defend,” Greene said.
Meanwhile, Neah Bay’s Meric Soeneke threw for two touchdowns, ran for a point-after touchdown and passed for two other PATs. He was 10 for 11 on his passes for 203 yards.
Logan Halttunen had a 38-yard touchdown catch. Josey Tyree also had TD runs of 4 and 8 yards.
The game was tied 56-56 with a minute left in the fourth quarter when the Red Devils’ Nicholas Steeves scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 3-yard run. Soeneke then hit Julian Carrick for a crucial two-pointer to make it 64-56.
The Blackhawks drove down to the 15-yard-line at the end of the game on a long run by Revey, but were not able to get a tying score. Greene said Soeneke didn’t play defense the whole game until that final series, when he went into the game as a defensive back. He came through with a couple of greats plays in that final series to deny Lummi a chance to tie the game.
“It was our first defensive stop of the half and that’s when it counted,” Greene said.
The Red Devils and Blackhawks squads will meet again at Lummi on Friday, Nov. 1.
First, the Red Devils have a very tough game against powerhouse Naselle (4-0) on the road at 6 p.m. Friday.

Sequim 27, North Mason 16
BELFAIR — The Wolves regrouped after last week’s close loss to North Kitsap, going up 21-8 at halftime on two touchdown passes by sophomore Kobe Applegate and 27-8 after three quarters.
Applegate, just a sophomore, put up great numbers in his first extended varsity action going 18 of 23 for 255 yards and the two TD passes with no interceptions. Taig Wiker, normally the starting quarterback, had to leave the game in the first quarter with a knee injury.
Head coach Erik Wiker said Taig is day-to-day with the injury and he doesn’t know if he will be able to play next week.
Wiker said the Wolves did a good job bouncing back from their tough, emotional loss against North Kitsap the week before.
“We had great practises this week,” Wiker said. “The past is the past.”
Wiker said Applegate did a great job, coming off the bench to fill in for Taig.
“He did really well. He ran the offense, he ran the RPO (run-pass option) packages, he went through the reads really well. He showed a lot of composure,” Wiker said.
Michael Young scored on a 34-yard run and a 17-yard pass reception for the Wolves and Garrett Hoesel added a 29-yard pass reception for Sequim.
Walker Ward carried 22 times for 79 yards and a score for Sequim (1-1, 3-1).
Wiker also said Lane Mote had a good game with three sacks and several tackles behind the line and that Isaiah Cowan had a blocked punt. He also said the Wolves’ offensive line did a good job protecting Applegate. Truman Nestor also had nine catches for 84 yards.

Crescent 62, Darrington 22
DARRINGTON — On a wet, muddy day, the Loggers made the long trek to Darrington a happy one, pasting the Loggers 62-22 in a nonleague contest on Friday night to win their second straight game.
“The kids were pumped up and ready to go after a long bus ride,” said coach Brian Shimko.
With the soggy conditions, the Loggers shut down their passing game and went almost exclusively to the run.
“It was a wet mess,” said Shimko. “We ran it up the middle until they stopped it.”
Crescent got more than 500 yards rushing. Brayden Emery ran the ball 19 times for 312 yards, while Wyatt Lee ran it 29 times for 215 yards.
Eric Emery did complete 7 out of 9 passes for 27 yards and a touchdown.
Eric Emery and Malachi Treadway also had interceptions. Shimko said Jayden Tejano also played a good game defensively.
Crescent (2-2) next travels to Taholah (1-3) for a game at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Montesano 70, Port Angeles 12
MONTESANO — Turnovers sank the Roughriders’ shot at being competitive against the Class 1A powerhouse Bulldogs.
A second-quarter stretch that included three Port Angeles interceptions and a Montesano fumble recovery that led to another score turned a 28-6 deficit after one quarter into a 63-6 halftime score.
Riders’ Coach Troy Mann said the Riders got to experience the culture at Montesano that has turned the Bulldogs into a Class 1A juggernaut that has outscored its opponents 238-26 this season.
“The culture there is an experience I don’t want to forget,” Mann said. “We’re going to get there. That’s where we want to be. This is the culture we want.”
Mann said he thought Ethan Flodstrom did well filling in at quarterback
“I enjoyed the way he fought, he didn’t drop his head,” Mann said.
Flodstrom hit Tyler Bowen for a 70-yard touchdown. The Roughriders scored another touchdown on a 12-yard run around the edge by Daniel Cable.
The Riders have a tough game coming up Friday. Port Angeles (0-1, 0-4) next plays at first-place Olympic (2-0, 3-1) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
