PREP FOOTBALL: North Olympic Peninsula teams cruise in nonleague contests

COUPEVILLE — Mark Feeney ran for a pair of scores and Chris Whitaker returned an interception 89 yards as the Sequim Wolves routed the Coupeville Wolves on the road.

Feeney had runs of 5 and 4 yards to give Sequim a 14-3 lead in the second quarter.

Before the half was over, Sequim had put the game away.

Miguel Moroles found Bailey Earley for an 11-yard touchdown and Whitaker made his long return to give Sequim a 27-3 lead after halftime.

“Whitaker played good on defense,” Sequim coach Erik Wiker said after Friday’s game. “And Matthew Schock on the defensive line had lots of pressure.

“The defense all did pretty darn good.”

Moroles had another nice game for Sequim (2-0), completed 10 of 12 passes with one touchdown and an interception. He also rushed nine times for 59 yards and a score.

Ethan Richmond led Sequim with 87 yards rushing on four carries and Gavin Velarde had a 60-yard touchdown run.

Ian Dennis caught five passes for 110 yards.

Sequim hosts Kingston (0-2) this Friday in the Olympic League opener for both teams.

VASHON — The Roughriders’ solid start to 2014 continued as they sailed past the Pirates in a nonleague contest.

Port Angeles scored rushing touchdowns on its first two possessions.

A 1-yard plunge from tackle Roberto Colonel out of the team’s Jumbo backfield opened the scoring, and Sam Burton added a 39-yard rush later in the first quarter.

“Going into the game we challenged the offensive and defensive lines and told them this was their game,” Riders’ offensive coordinator Vic Reykdal said.

“Our up-front guys had some pretty solid performances.”

Nathan Angevine moved from quarterback to fullback and scored twice for Port Angeles, the first coming on a 2-yard score in the second quarter.

Ryan Rodocker started at quarterback and was 4 of 5 for 45 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter.

A Jace Lausche score gave the Riders a 35-0 halftime lead.

Angevine added his second rushing touchdown, a 91-yard ramble in the third quarter.

He lead the team in rushing with 8 carries for 137 yards.

Lausche had 7 rushes for 68 yards for Port Angeles.

“Jace had a big night for us, too,” Reykdal said.

The Riders (2-0) visit North Mason (1-1) in the Olympic League opener for each team.

KIRKLAND — Senior quarterback Jeff Seton is helping the Redhawks live up to their new nickname.

Seton was again impressive through the air, completing 10 of 13 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown pass to Austin Khile as Port Townsend evened its record at 1-1.

“We probably threw the most I ever have as coach,” Redhawks coach Nick Snyder said.

“Jeff is just exciting out there. The three misses all should have been caught, too; Jeff put them right in their belly or right in their hands.”

In total, Seton is now 18 of 23 for 323 yards, two passing touchdowns and an interception on the season.

Khile had two receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown and one rush for a 1-yard score.

Port Townsend produced a balanced rushing attack, totaling 176 yards on 32 carries.

Zach Wilson had seven rushes for 49 yards, David Sua 11 for 45, and Isaiah Mason four attempts for 28 yards.

All three scored rushing touchdowns for the Redhawks.

Freshman Detrius Kelsall added three carries for 23 yards.

“Detrius is a gamer,” Snyder said. “He moves a little slow in practice and in pregame but he can really turn it on when the game starts.”

Backup quarterback Berkely Hill completed his only pass of the night, a 55-yard touchdown to sophomore Jonathan Smith.

The Redhawks host Klahowya (0-2) in the Olympic League opener for each school Friday.

Clallam Bay 56, Rainier Christian 26

CLALLAM BAY — The Bruins started a little slow, according to head coach Cal Ritter, but adjustments to the team’s blocking schemes lead to a big win at home.

“We switched up how we blocked on our running plays and that seemed to make a big difference,” Ritter said.

“Defensively, they ran kind of a different formation so we had to bring linebackers up to stop it.”

Casey Randall led Clallam Bay with 18 rushes for 208 yards and three touchdown runs and Kyle Keys had eight carries for 83 yards and two scores.

Clayton Willis returned an interception 52 yards for a score just before halftime as the Bruins went into the break up 34-6.

Kelly Gregory led the Clallam Bay defense with 21 tackles, two forced fumbles and a sack.

“Kelly had a phenomenal night defensively,” Ritter said.

Alan Greene added nine tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and had two sacks.

“We are getting there,” Ritter said. “We had some costly turnovers and some penalties but that’s why we practice, to iron those things out.”

Clallam Bay (2-0) hosts Quilcene Friday.

AUBURN — Neil Peppard and KC Spencer connected for three touchdowns as the Loggers won their first game since 2012.

“Just great to see the kids come out with the resolve to right the ship after a tough loss one week ago [to Clallam Bay],” Crescent coach Darrel Yount said.

“I like the way we defended — hit with a purpose. Offensively we were able to find a rhythm just often enough to string some plays together with great results.

“Anytime you can get 500-plus yards of total offense, you know good things are happening with the football.”

All three of Spencer’s catches went for touchdowns. The freshman hauled in touchdowns of 20, 45 and 35 yards.

Senior captain Zach Fletcher led the way defensively with 20 tackles and added two touchdowns rushing as part of a 341-yard rushing outburst by the Loggers.

Peppard threw for 146 yards and rushed for 130 at the helm of Crescent’s read-option offense.

McCabe Story ran 12 times for 90 hard-earned yards, breaking tackle after tackle and often carrying defenders as he gained extra yards.

The Loggers trailed 14-12 at halftime and held a slim 26-24 lead before exploding for the first 20 points of the fourth quarter to put the Kings away.

After Muckleshoot scored, Crescent drove the length of the field before taking a knee at the Kings 3-yard line.

“I think the point was made,” Yount said.

Yount added that the Loggers (1-1) still have room for improvement.

“Too many procedure penalties offensively and way too many missed blocks, but we were able to balance that with great individual effort from our skills guys and four big takeaways on defense,” Yount said.

“We will continue to improve. The kids have the resolve to do so. But this was a big, big step in the right direction.”

Crescent hosts Oakville this Saturday in Joyce.
