PREP FOOTBALL: Port Angeles puts up a fight before falling to North Kitsap; other area reports

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles gave North Kitsap a scare before falling 26-10 on senior night at Civic Field.

The Roughriders (2-3, 4-4) played the seventh-ranked Vikings (5-0, 8-0) closer than any team has this season and are the first Olympic League team to lose to North Kitsap by less than 20 points.

Port Angeles held a 7-6 lead a few minutes before halftime Friday, but North Kitsap’s Kyle North scored one of his four touchdowns to give the Vikings a 12-7 lead at the break.

North added two more in the second half, while the Riders could only put up three more points on a field goal by Ryan Beck.

North finished with 17 carries for 187 yards. He also caught one pass for a 52-yard gain.

Port Angeles is still alive in the postseason race.

The Riders face Kingston (1-4, 1-7) on the road next week. A win, coupled with a Sequim win over Bremerton, would set up a mini-playoff with the Wolves and North Mason (3-3, 4-4), which one its league finale over Bremerton 21-14 on Friday night, for the Olympic League’s third and fourth postseason berths.

If Port Angeles wins and Sequim (2-3, 4-4) loses, the Riders would claim the Olympic League’s fourth spot at districts.

Miki Andrus led the Riders with 40 yards rushing on 11 carries, while Sam Burton and Nathan Angevine each had 37 yards on nine and 10 carries, respectively.

Burton scored Port Angeles’ only touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Ryan Rodocker.

Rodocker finished 4 for 13 with 48 yards and one interception. Along with Burton, Kellen Landry, Angevine and Jace Bohman each had one catch.

For the game, North Kitsap outgained the Riders 400 to 159.

The Vikings head for a clash with Olympic (5-0, 6-2) that will determine the Olympic League champion this Friday in Poulsbo.

But they will do so without starting quarterback Alex Allbee, who suffered a broken collar bone against Port Angeles.

The Trojans, meanwhile, made a strong statement heading into the showdown with a 39-0 win over Sequim on Friday.

Neah Bay 78, Crescent 32

NEAH BAY — The top-ranked Red Devils remained undefeated with a classy rout of the young Loggers in Northwest Football League play.

“Neah Bay is simply an outstanding team,” Crescent coach Darrell Yount said following Friday’s game.

“I know that’s nothing new to anyone who has faced them or seen them play this season, but what gets your immediate attention is just a whole lot of great athletes who execute with precision.

“Great to see. Not so much fun to coach against.”

Neah Bay used the game against the much-less experienced and hobbled Loggers to give more experience to its backup players.

Michael McGee was used as Neah Bay’s feature back, while leading rusher Cole Svec didn’t have any carries.

McGee finished with 10 carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 17 yards.

Svec still played and even scored on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Rwehabura Munyagi Jr. and a 78-yard kickoff return.

“My hat’s off to [Neah Bay] coach [Tony] McCaulley and his staff,” Yount said.

“They were the epitome of true sportsmen tonight. They could have held the pedal to the floor and the score would have gotten ugly in a hurry. They are so explosive.

“But I think he recognized an opportunity to play some of his other kids, to get them some reps that they may need in a supportive role as they move through the playoffs, and at the same time afford our young team an opportunity to compete.”

Cameron Buzzell scored three touchdowns for Neah Bay.

The first came on an 11-yard pass from Munyagi, the second was a 31-yard interception return, and the third was on a 51-yard run.

Levi Swan had a pair of touchdown catches for the Red Devils, both from backup quarterback Benjamin Greene, Christopher Martinez returned an interception 51 yards for a score and Elisha Winck took his only carry of the game 4 yards for a touchdown.

Defensively, Roland Gagnon topped Neah Bay with 11.5 tackles and two sacks. Joseph Yallup added two sacks and Mateo Garcia had one.

The Loggers had a bunch of long plays, most coming from the arm of quarterback Neil Peppard.

The sophomore threw touchdown passes of 92 and 56 yards to Collin West, and hooked up with Zach Fletcher for scores of 70 and 51 yards.

Peppard finished 6 of 14 for 284 yards with four touchdown passes and two interceptions. He also ran in a 10-yard touchdown.

Fletcher amassed 305 all-purpose yards, including 123 yards receiving on three catches. He also had 13 tackles.

West caught three passes for 161 yards.

“Collin West had a career kind of day for him. Great to see,” Yount said.

“And what more do you say about Fletcher? He’s led us all season. So he rings up a 300-yard game and leads us in tackles again.

“The kid’s exhausted and we all just kind of shrug our shoulders and say, ‘That’s Zach.’ We kind of expect it from him and that’s really not right.

“It’s exceptional is what it is. What a competitor.”

Cody Wolfer recovered two fumbles for the Loggers and Peppard picked off a pass.

Both teams wrap up the regular season this week.

Neah Bay (4-0, 8-0) plays at rival Clallam Bay (1-2, 4-3) on Friday, while the Crescent (0-4, 2-6) hosts Lopez (2-1, 6-1) for its homecoming game Saturday afternoon.

Port Townsend 48, Chimacum 0

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks clinched the Olympic League 1A title with a blowout win over the rival Cowboys at Memorial Field on Friday night.

“They were pretty depleted, and we knew that,” Port Townsend coach Nick Snyder said.

“They had a whole bunch of kids out, but I thought Chimacum played really tough.”

Wesley Wheeler scored two rushing touchdowns for the Redhawks and David Sua, Jeff Seton and Detrius Kelsall had one apiece.

Cameron Constantine scored on a pass and Zach Wilson picked up a fumble and returned it to the end zone.

Port Townsend (5-1, 6-2) finishes the regular season at home against Charles Wright this Friday.

Chimacum closes out its season on the road against Vashon that same day.

Clallam Bay’s game postponed

CLALLAM BAY — The Clallam Bay-Tulalip Heritage high school football game scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Quil Ceda Stadium in Marysville has been postponed.

Quil Ceda Stadium is located on the Marysville-Pilchuck High School campus, the scene of a deadly school shooting Friday morning.

Clallam Bay athletic director Kris Hanson confirmed that Marysville School District, which operates the stadium, postponed all athletic events planned for the facility.
