TACOMA — Port Townsend’s defense dominated in the Redhawks’ revenge game with the Tarriers, limiting Charles Wright to 46 yards of total offense on 41 plays in a nonleague victory.
Port Townsend (6-0, 9-0) beat the Tarriers 49-6 in the final game of the regular season last year, but were shocked, and eliminated from the playoffs, in a 24-14 loss the following week.
The Redhawks were up 16-0 after one quarter of Friday’s game.
“We marched right down the field on them on a four- or five-play drive, and stuck it in for a TD,” Port Townsend head coach Nick Snyder said.
“Then we got a safety, I think that was Hogie [senior lineman David Hoglund].
“Our second touchdown, Berkeley Hill scored on a bootleg — guys were covered, and he ran it in.”
The Redhawks were inside the red zone twice in the second quarter but came away empty-handed.
“We muffed a snap and dropped a handoff,” Snyder said.
“We were trying some different things and trying not to show everything since the game was being scouted [by potential playoff opponents].”
But Port Townsend got back on the right track offensively after halftime, including two 57-yard touchdown runs by Detrius Kelsall.
“That third quarter, Detrius had a ton of yards,” Snyder said. “He got out on the edge and just took off.
“He has some hidden speed. A lot of the really good running backs don’t need to show the breakaway speed right away, they wait until they really need to use it — and he used it last night.”
Kelsall, a sophomore, finished with 227 yards rushing on 11 carries.
As a team, the Redhawks rushed 50 times for 438 yards.
Port Townsend held down Charles Wright’s dual-threat QB Henry Cheney.
Cheney blistered the Redhawks for 398 yards of total offense in the district playoffs last season.
He threw for just 46 yards, and the Tarriers ran for only 4 yards in Friday’s game.
“Hogie and Keegan [Khile] were all over their backfield,” Snyder said.
“Both those guys have so many tackles for losses this season.
“Keegan is such a good linebacker, and Hogie plays so well on the line.”
Khile missed last year’s district playoff game with a dislocated knee.
Port Townsend will host a district playoff game against Bellevue Christian (4-4) at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Field in Port Townsend.
The Redhawks shut out the Vikings 44-0 at home in a nonleague game in Week 2.
Chimacum 45, Vashon 38
PORT TOWNSEND — The Cowboys outlasted the Pirates for their second win on the season in a back-and-forth battle at Memorial Field.
Up by a touchdown in the final two minutes, Chimacum couldn’t land the knockout punch, missing a late field goal and turning the ball over to Vashon for one last drive with no timeouts remaining.
“They picked up two first downs and got the ball out to near midfield,” Chimacum assistant coach Tony Haddenham said.
“The last play of the game their QB kept it, fumbled it, and then ran around for about 110 yards to pick up 30.
“At the end there, he was running laterally and Lane Dotson came in for the tackle.”
Vashon jumped out to a 24-8 lead after one quarter, but the Cowboys answered with a 24-8 second quarter.
“We ran the ball pretty well and passed it quite well, despite the conditions,” Haddenham said of the rain-soaked night that made the field muddy.
The Cowboys finished with 430 yards of total offense.
Eoin Harnett ran for an 80-yard TD, and Matthew Torres had a 70-yard score.
Logan Shaw added 90 yards rushing on a dozen carries.
“Defensively, we haven’t seen anything like what Vashon runs, because everybody runs the spread [offense],” Haddenham.
“And they are a small team, but really played tough.
“Our defense gave up some plays, but when we needed stops we got them.”
Chimacum (1-5, 2-7) will play Coupeville (1-5, 1-8) in a half-game playoff for Olympic League 1A’s third playoff berth at Sequim High School on Tuesday at 5 p.m. .
The winner of Tuesday’s tiebreaker will visit defending state champion Cascade Christian on Saturday.
The Cowboys and Wolves split a pair of contests earlier this season, Coupeville winning 28-26 at Chimacum and the Cowboys beating the Wolves 14-9 at Coupeville.
“We just need to do what we’ve been doing the past few games,” Haddenham said.
“And that’s to run the ball, keep drives alive and avoid the three-and-out on offense, and to play tough defensively.”
Neah Bay 48, Clallam Bay 14
NEAH BAY — The Red Devils put together a 40-point first quarter to turn the Battle of the Bays into a blowout.
Neah Bay quarterback Rwehabura Munyagi Jr. threw three touchdown passes, hitting Cameron Buzzell on scores from 27 and 24 yards, and finding Phillip Greene on a 43-yard score.
Munyagi also ran in another TD on a QB sneak.
A 7-yard TD run from Cole Svec and a two-point conversion run from Michael McGree triggered the running clock late in the first quarter.
Chris Tageant scored on a 31-yard pass from Isaiah Knaus in the third quarter to put the Red Devils up 48-0.
Clallam Bay broke the shutout when Sam Signor scored on a 4-yard run.
The Bruins also got a late TD, a 7-yard run by Vernon Chamblin.
“He was pretty happy about it,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said.
“It took us three plays to do it, but I’m glad we were able to get one for him before the season ended.
“He’s real pleasant to have on the team and he sure tries hard for us.
“I thank [Neah Bay coach] Tony [McCaulley] for helping us there.”
The Red Devils (4-0, 8-0) ran their winning streak to 33 games and will have a bye for the Quad-District playoffs next week.
Clallam Bay (1-3, 2-6) will travel to play Taholah (4-4), likely on Friday.
