PREP FOOTBALL RECAP: Mistakes in red zone cost Sequim

Neah Bay and Quilcene win big again

SEQUIM — The Sequim football team had plenty of yardage and made several trips into the red zone, but fumbles and other mistakes kept the Wolves out of the end zone until the very end of the game in a critical 28-7 loss to Olympic.

The game, originally set for Friday night, was played Saturday afternoon due to a power outage. It was one of several games this weekend affected by wet and windy storms.

Sequim’s yardage was nearly identical to Olympic’s, but three lost fumbles did in the Wolves.

Sequim got 79 yards passing from Zeke Schmadeke, including a 31-yard pass to Jericho Julmist and a 21-yard pass to Solomon Sheppard, and 75 yards rushing, including a 32-yarder. Tommy Reandeau added 70 yards rushing.

If the Wolves could have beat Olympic, they would have found themselves in essentially a four-way tie for first place in the Olympic League standings. Now Sequim is in fourth place at 2-2 behind Olympic (3-1), North Kitsap (4-1) and Bainbridge (4-1). The Wolves have games left at home against Bainbridge next week and at North Mason (1-3) on Oct. 31.

Squalicum 22, Port Angeles 0

PORT ANGELES — In wet and soggy conditions that helped cause six first-half turnovers, the Port Angeles defense allowed Squalicum just one touchdown on offense until the final three minutes of the game. The big break for the Storm came when they got a 57-yard scoop-and-score on a Port Angeles fumble.

The game was also marred by 11 penalties, nine of them against Squalicum, in the third quarter alone. In the end, the Roughriders battled hard, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but were left still looking for their first win.

It looks like the Riders’ (0-7) best shot at a victory this season will be this weekend at a 1-6 Bremerton team.

Neah Bay 44, Lummi 0

NEAH BAY — Neah Bay won its fifth game in a row in dominating fashion, blanking Lummi 44-0 at home.

Neah Bay had 228 yards rushing and was up 36-0 at the half. Jodell Wimberly had 120 yards rushing and Makyah Chambers 93 as the Red Devils’ defense also recovered four Lummi fumbles. Kane McGee-Greene had 11 tackles, including a quarterback sack, and two fumble recoveries.

Neah Bay (6-0, 7-1) plays at Crescent (2-4, 3-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Charles Wright 48, Crescent 36

TACOMA — The Crescent Loggers had yet another wild, high-scoring game as the two teams combined for 84 points. It was the fourth game this year the Loggers have played in with more than 80 points. Two of their games had more than 100 points.

Josh Bersom had a 73-yard touchdown run and 101 yards rushing total. Dom Sprague had 241 total all-purpose yards rushing, receiving and on kick returns.

Henry Bourm had 10 carries for 51 yards and threw for 117 yards and three touchdown passes. Mikah Love had four catches for 75 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown and a 25-yard touchdown.

One bummer for the Loggers is that the Hood Canal Bridge was closed due to the wind and the team bus was forced to come home up the slow U.S. Highway 101 route up the Hood Canal. The team didn’t get home until 3 a.m.

Quilcene 48, Darrington 8

QUILCENE — The Quilcene Rangers got 199 yards rushing and took care of business on defense, putting pressure on Darrington’s quarterback all game long in a 48-8 victory Saturday.

Mason Iverson had nine carries for 60 yards and two short touchdowns, while Andrew Perez-Lopez ran for 64 yards on seven carries and passed for another 50 yards with two touchdown passes, one a 15-yarder to Taylor Boling and the other a 25-yarder to Robert Evans.

Tucker Boling led the team with 10 tackles and an interception, while Taylor Boling had eight tackles and a quarterback sack, putting pressure on Darrington’s quarterback all game.

Tyler Wills also caused two fumbles and recovered one of them himself.

Quilcene (6-1, 5-1) next plays at Crescent (2-4, 3-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Raymond-South Bend 42, East Jefferson 12

SOUTH BEND — Playing in windy and wet conditions down in southwestern Washington, the young East Jefferson football team kept Raymond-South Bend in check most of the night in a 42-12 loss.

Luke O’Hara and Tyler Martin each had big games.

O’Hara had three catches for 89 yards and ran three times for 85 yards for 174 total from scrimmage. His runs included a 74-yard scamper, and he also had a fumble recovery and six tackles on defense.

Martin led the team with a whopping 19 tackles and a quarterback sack. Alex Garcia also had two catches for 28 yards and ran four times for 38 yards. He scored a touchdown on one of his receptions.

East Jefferson (0-7) hosts Kingston (1-6) in Port Townsend at 7 p.m. Friday.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 34, Forks 6

PE ELL — After Forks’ Landen Olson scored a touchdown to open the game’s scoring, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley scored 34 straight points in a 34-6 win.

Forks lost three turnovers, which were huge. The Spartans’ Gage Willenbrink also recovered a fumble while Estevan Ramos had an interception. Willenbrink’s recovery helped set up Olson’s two-yard run for a score.

PEWV also had a onside kick that slipped through Forks’ hands in the soggy turf, allowing the Titans to grab the ball for a 35-yard gain.

Forks dropped to 1-2 in league and 2-5 overall. The Spartans next host Raymond-South Bend (0-3, 2-5) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Spartans can still qualify for a crossover postseason game with a win over RSB.
