Sequim edges Bremerton 7-6; Forks thumps Ilwaco 28-0

PORT TOWNSEND — The young East Jefferson football team put up its best performance of the season in a 54-13 homecoming loss to rival Klahowya on Friday night at Memorial Field.

“Best game we’ve played so far,” coach Tony Haddenham said. “We came up a little short but we are trying to make things work and put dudes in solid positions to have success.

Rivals freshman Luke O’Hara had both East Jefferson touchdowns, hauling in a 15-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Silas Morford for a score and picking up a blocked field goal and running it in 20 yards for another score.

“He scooped and scored,” Haddenham said. “We went for a field goal, Klahowya blocked it and they thought it was a dead ball. Luke O’Hara was right there by the ball and he scooped it and scored for a touchdown.”

Morford also completed a 35-yard pass to sophomore Jackson Dupuy.

Dupuy rushed five times for 50 yards including a long of 4o.

“He had a day,” coach Haddenham said of Dupuy.

while Morford had 11 carries for 50 yards.

Sophomore Alex Garcia totaled seven carries for 30 yards.

Collectively, East Jefferson ran for 168 yards on 32 carries, a 5.3-yards per carry average.

“That was the game plan, we had eight players touch the ball and they all ran hard,” Haddenham said.

Lane Martin had 11 tackles to lead the Rivals’ defense. Brody Anderson added nine tackles and Dupuy, Jameson Henery, O’Hara and Garcia all had eight tackles apiece.

“All those guys were active and involved for us,” Haddenham said.

Henery also punted four times for 179 yards (44.8 per punt).

East Jefferson (0-3, 0-5) visits Annie Wright on Saturday.

Sequim 7, Bremerton 6

BREMERTON —

Malachi Hampton caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Zeke Schmadeke in the first quarter, Jericho Julmist blocked a Bremerton extra-point attempt and the Wolves’ defense hung tough in a 7-6 Olympic League victory Friday.

Sequim was stuck in traffic in the aftermath of Friday afternon’s traffic collision in front of 7 Cedars Casino, delaying the start of the contest 90 minutes.

“We got caught in the accident, pushed the start time back to 8 p.m. and we came out a little flat,” Wolves coach Ian Henley said. “We had a hard time with anything offensively. We struggled to block. The change in routine kind of caught us flat footed and they spent the whole game trying to respond to that.”

Henley said the defense came through with multiple red zone stops.

“We responsded well on big plays,” Henley said. “We stopped them on fourth down a lot. They did fumble the ball a few times and that helped us. Bremerton played hard and we were able to make that one extra play we were able to block that extra point.

“That was Jericho’s first game for us, he turned out late.”

Schmadeke rushed 19 times for 89 yards. Liam Wiker added 12 carries for 38 yards.

The Wolves managed just 150 total yards, while the Knights had 192.

“It was a very evenly matched game between two similar teams,” Henley said.

“Zeke made a couple of big plays with his legs as he has all season. Liam Wiker played through sickness and Malachi Hampton same thing, he’d been battling a cold all weekend.

Sequim (2-0, 4-1) visits North Kitsap for a 7 p.m. Thursday game.

“Losing that day of practice makes it tough on us, but NK is in the same situation,” Henley said. “We talked about being focused on Monday and moving everything up a day.”

Forks 28, Ilwaco 0

ILWACO — Buoyed by a fast start, the Spartans thumped the previously unbeaten Fishermen in their Central 2B West Division opener on the road Friday.

“Excited for the guys, we digested the game plan really well, handled the travel down there 4.5 hours, takes some time, so I’m proud of them for their mindset going into the game,” coach Trevor Highfield said.

“This five game [league] stretch is the part of the season that matters [for postseason] qualification.”

Bubba Hernandez tossed two touchdown passes to Cash Barajas, the first a 17-yarder to open the scoring and the last a 63-yard catch-and-run on a slant-and-go pattern in the third quarter to go up 28-0.

“Their defense was doing a good job on our RPOs, so we went with a slant-and-go and Cash took it all the way,” Highfield said.

Landon Olson also had a 20-yard rushing touchdown and Kingston Steffen ran in a score from 5-yards out as the Spartans led 21-0 at halftime.

“Kingston had some nice runs throughout the drive and he got rewarded with a five-yard TD run,” Highfield said.

Forks racked up 320 yards of total offense, 173 on the ground.

Highfield said defensive end Sawyer Graham led the shutout effort.

“Defense played lights out Sawyer Graham had his best defensive game,” Highfield said. “He had nine tackles, five of them for loss and a sack, he really dominated at defensive end. He’s gotten better and better every week. ”

“Our defensive line was outstanding, Kaiden Ward had seven tackles and Jeremy Hutto had six tackles.”

Highfield was pleased with the start to league play.

“We knew this would be a farily good gauge of where we are at,” Highfield said. “Adna will be a tough opponent for homecoming, they’ve played some bigger schools to start the season and just played Napavine really tough.”

Forks (1-0, 2-3) hosts Adna on Friday.

North Kitsap 55, Port Angeles 13

POULSBO — After shaking off a long bus trip due to the traffic collision at 7 Cedars Casino Friday afternoon, the Roughriders had some bright spots against a Vikings team (1-1, 2-3) that has shown vulnerabilities this season, but couldn’t keep up with North Kitsap’s size and strength.

“They are still North Kitsap,” coach Dustin Clark said. “We had our chances. We have to play a perfect game to win [against a team like North Kitsap] and in the first half we had three or four plays that if we hit them we are right there with them.”

Easton Fisher caught four passes for 42 yards and a pair of touchdown passes from Blake Sohlberg.

“We struggled rushing the ball,” Clark said. “Their front four are really good, the best defensive line in the league. We tried to get outside with some sweeps and some other stuff early on and they were all over it.”

Forced to the air, Sohlberg completed 11-of-42 passes for 100 yards and the two TDs.

Ian Smithson caught four balls for 30 yards, Kaden Pointe had a catch for 15 yards and Oliver Martinez made two grabs for 13 yards.

Pointe also returned a kickoff 80 yards deep into North Kitsap territory.

Defensively, Clark said Lane Wilson, Dylan Mann, Cyrus Deede, Hunter Flores and Martinez played hard throughout the game.

“Lane Wilson was really good for us,” Clark said. “We moved him from outside linebacker to defensive end and he had a good game. Dylan Mann was pretty much involved in every tackle and Hunter Flores gets double teamed [at defensive tackle] every week which makes for a long night, but he fought hard.”

“Deedee had a big interception, he caught it at our eight-yard line and returned it about 7o yards. Read it clean and picked it,” Clark said.

Neah Bay 60, Darrington 6

DARRINGTON — Tyler Swan rumbled for four first-half touchdowns as the Red Devils routed the Loggers on Friday night.

Seactis Woodruff also added a first-half score to put Neah Bay up 44-6 at halftime.

Jodell Wimberly also recovered a fumble that led to a Swan touchdown. Wimberly later scampered for a 63-yard score to trigger the 40-point running clock with 10 minutes left in the third quarter and tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to JQ Johnson.

Neah Bay (4-0, 5-1) visits Crescent on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Quilcene 45, Muckleshoot 0

AUBURN — Freshman Isaac Figueroa sparked the Rangers in a romp over the Kings on Friday.

“The kids played well, nobody was injured and everybody got to play quite a bit,” coach Trey Beathard said. “Penalties are still hurting us, we had a couple of scores called back, so if we can keep working to cut those out we can be a tough team.”

Figueroa had a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and also picked off and returned an interception for another score.

“Isaac played QB in the second half, and has done a great job of filling in where we need,” Beathard said. “He’s already played running back, fullback, quarterback, offensive guard and tight end. He’s the next man up for every position.

Andrew Perez connected on a 30-yard TD pass to Taylor Boling, while Robert Evans added a 36-yard rushing score.

Mason Iverson also scored a touchdown on the ground.

Quilcene’s Tyler Wills also connected on a 34-yard field goal try in the third quarter.

“He was a little excited. He kicked the kickoff through the endzone and it was high [in the air],” Beathard said.

“That was probably the first field goal we’ve made in about 10 or 11 years.”

Beathard said Kaden Faller was in the offensive backfield all day for the Rangers’ defense.

“Kaden Faller had several sacks,” “Beathard said. “He was pressuring their QB all game long. And Mason Iverson also was getting a lot of pressure. Taylor Boling shut down the middle for us.”

Tyler Beukes also picked off a pass and had a long return for the Rangers.

“He’s playing well every game and is a leader by example,” Beathard said of Beukes.

Quilcene (4-1) plays Evergreen Lutheran next Saturday.
