PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Chimacum upended at home; Port Townsend and Forks win nonleague games

CHIMACUM — Turnovers and a potential touchdown ruled incomplete out of bounds were the difference as Chimacum fell 28-22 to Bellevue Christian in the Cowboys’ homecoming contest Friday at Memorial Field.

“I thought we should have had it,” Chimacum coach Chris Storm said.

“I thought our line blocked really well all night. They’ve been getting it done all season. We ran it well up the middle, we just had some turnovers. We made some poor decisions in the passing game for a couple of interceptions and we had one where it was a fumble in a pile, looked like our guy was down and it may have come out after the whistle.

“And they stopped us at the goal line earlier in the game, they called a touchdown out of bounds where it looked he was in to me.”

Injuries and off-field issues have thinned Chimacum’s roster, so much that the team is playing five freshman at all times.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries, especially to juniors and seniors, and that hurts on a team that’s half freshmen.”

Storm said Issac Purser caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Cole Dotson and Dotson ran in the Cowboy’s other TD.

“Cole scrambled for some good yardage,” Storm said. “Logan Storm ran for a bunch of yards.

“Our running game is pretty solid, we just need to make some smarter plays in the passing game.”

Chimacum (0-4, 1-6) visits Vashon (0-3, 0-5) on Friday.

Port Townsend 34, Concrete 20

CONCRETE — The Redhawks responded to a tough loss the week before marred by turnovers by taking care of the ball and having an answer every time the Lions scored in a 34-20 nonleague road win.

Quarterback Noa Montoya passed for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns in Friday’s win. He also had an interception on defense.

Nico Winegar returned to the lineup after an injury and scored on a 55-yard pass from Montoya, scored two point-afters and had an interception. Jerome Reaux Jr. scored on a 15-yard run and Cole Crawford scored on a 20-yard TD pass. Crawford also blocked a punt.

The Redhawks lost a high-scoring game to Bellevue Christian the week before largely because of turnovers. In the Concrete game, it was the Redhawks’ turn to win the turnover battle as three interceptions (Dylan Tracer had the other INT) and Crawford’s blocked punt set up three touchdowns.

Then in the fourth quarter, after Concrete scored to pull within 26-20, the Redhawks held on to the ball for a long drive that culminated in a Montoya 5-yard TD run with a minute left to play, essentially putting the game out of reach.

“We needed a long drive at the end to run the clock out,” said coach Patrick Gaffney.

Gaffney also said Winegar’s return from injury helped the Redhawks immensely.

“He’s huge for us. On defense, he calls the plays and puts everyone in the right spot. He’s really vaulable,” he said.

Port Townsend (2-1, 3-4) has a huge league game at 6 p.m. Friday at home against first-place Klahowya (3-0, 5-1) for a chance to tie for first.

Lummi 42, Neah Bay 8

BELLINGHAM — The Blackhawks had the upper hand in a rematch of a week four game won 40-34 by the Red Devils.

“The difference is all in the physical battle,” Neah Bay coach TJ Greene said. “That was where we fell short. We just couldn’t sustain that for four quarters. We played them well in the first half, we were kind of in the same position we were in the first game down 12-0, but we were just having troubles”

Injuries also have hurt the team again this season, especially at quarterback.

Down starter Josey Tyree to surgery to fix a broken finger, backup Meric Soeneke also went out with an injury Friday.

“Ramon Tinoco had to take snaps under center and we had to go to a wildcat offense and were a little one-dimensional,” Greene said.

Neah Bay also is on its third center of the season.

“We haven’t played a game this year with the same starting eight,” Greene said. “There’s still talent here, we just don’t have the chemistry working for us yet.”

Joe Bain scored and Billy Parkin added the two-point conversion on the Red Devils TD.

“Jay Brunk did a lot of the leg work to get us down there in scoring position,” Greene said.

Neah Bay (2-2, 3-4) will host Darrington on Friday.

Forks 49, Olympic 26
