PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: North Kitsap shuts out Port Angeles and other area recaps

Sequim, Neah Bay, Crescent all win

PORT ANGELES — North Kitsap showed why it’s ranked 10th in Class 2A in a 55-0 shutout of Port Angeles on Friday.

“They don’t rebuild, they reload,” Roughriders coach Bret Curtis said of the Vikings.

“They ended up with like three or four big plays, three really long plays from scrimmage that killed us.”

Port Angeles trailed 6-0 after one quarter, and had a chance to score its first points of the season in the second quarter.

“We’re still not executing on offense like we need to,” Curtis said.

“We got some first downs, we got a longer pass down to Garrett Edwards, but we were not able to push it in. We just aren’t converting when we get those opportunities.

“It hurts us and that is deflating.”

Curtis is seeing some positives with his young team, a squad that starts four sophomores on offense and either six or seven depending on formation, on defense.

“It’s disappointing to lose resoundingly like we did, but we are seeing glimpses of good individual play, good team play at times, but we have to be more consistent,” Curtis said.

“We’ve been playing good assignment football defensively, for the most part.

“Offensively, we will have a play blocked real well, but the execution in the backfield isn’t there.

“Then we have a play where the backfield does its job, but we don’t have the blocking.

“The challenge is getting it all clicking, getting all 11 parts to mesh.”

The Riders (0-3) will host North Mason (0-3) for homecoming at Civic Field on Friday at 7 p.m.

“We feel like we match up pretty well with North Mason,” Curtis said.

“We feel like we can win. Somebody outside the program will see 55-0, but we are showing improvement. We just have to keep moving forward.”

Sequim 28, Centralia 14

CENTRALIA — A strong rushing attack and some timely defensive stops and turnovers led the Wolves to a nonleague victory over the Tigers.

Sequim racked up 243 rushing yards in Friday’s game, led by Tyler Conn’s 98 yards on 20 carries, including two second-half touchdowns.

Wolves’ junior Keeshawn Whitney rushed for first-half TDs of 8 and 30 yards, and had 11 carries for 61 yards before a twisted ankle forced him from the game.

Trailing 14-13 at halftime, the Wolves’ defense clamped down and pitched a second-half shutout.

The momentum swung to Sequim in the third quarter.

The Wolves forced a turnover on downs when Centralia threatened inside the Sequim 5-yard line early in the third quarter.

Conn’s 5-yard TD run capped a 12-play, 97-yard drive on the following Wolves’ possession.

The drive was extended by a 47-yard third-down connection from Riley Cowan to Kyler Rollness.

Conn added a second TD run in the fourth quarter to give Sequim a 28-14 lead.

The Wolves’ James Thayer and Payton Glasser had fourth-quarter interceptions to keep the Tigers out of the end zone.

Sequim (2-1) opens Olympic League 2A Division play at Bremerton (1-2) next Friday.

Crescent 50, School for the Deaf 18

JOYCE — Wyatt McNeece, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound senior, rushed nine times for 91 yards and three touchdowns, and had two sacks on defense as the Loggers ran away from the Terriers.

“Defensively, offensively, he was the stud of the game,” Crescent coach Brian Shimko said.

The School for the Deaf hung close with Crescent for a half — until some defensive adjustments helped the Loggers pitch a second-half shutout.

“They had a tank of a guy at running back, a 250-pounder,” Shimko said.

“We were just tackling too high. And they had an athletic quarterback we were having trouble containing.”

“So I talked to our seniors at halftime and told them we have to take the big guy’s legs out with our tackles and keep the QB contained and we’d be fine.”

Shimko also praised the play of eighth-grader Darren Lee.

“He really stepped up for us,” Shimko said. “He had two forced fumbles. One of them popped out right into McCabe’s [Story] hands and he took off with it.”

KC Spencer threw touchdown passes of 47 yards to Story, and 43 to Noah Leonard.

Spencer also had an interception on defense.

Shimko held Eric Emery, Caleb Anderson and Robert Cox out of the game to rest them for the Loggers game at Quilcene (2-0) on Saturday.
