PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Redhawks steamroll Vashon; Sequim and Neah Bay win

PORT TOWNSEND — Noa Montoya tossed three touchdowns to Dylan Tracer and ran for two other scores as Port Townsend put a solid hurtin’ on Vashon in a 40-13 Nisqually/Olympic League contest at Memorial Field on Friday.

“Like I said before, it was all of our guys getting involved,” Redhawks coach Patrick Gaffney said.

“Noa played a really good game. He threw a couple of touchdowns, ran for a TD and he had another called back on a punt return.

“Dylan Tracer had a big night, he scored a couple of times on passes and ran for well over 100 yards. And Jerome Reaux Jr. had some big runs like he always does.”

Gaffney said Maxpreps.com showed Reaux entered the game leading the league in rushing (348 yards on an average of 15.1 yards per carry). The freshman speedster only added to those numbers in the big win as the Redhawks’ flexbone attack ran over and through the Pirates defense.

“We had much of our success running right at them,” Gaffney said.

“We got great blocking out of Murphy Klemann again. “He’s like a skinny guard out there playing wide receiver.”

Port Townsend only conceded one score defensively, that one coming late in the contest when Gaffney said he was playing as many reserves as his 19-player dressed roster would allow.

Vashon’s other score came when Port Townsend fumbled in the end zone on a punt attempt.

“Defensively we were steady and we didn’t allow any big plays,” Gaffney said. “We made them turn it over on downs a lot and got a lot of third and fourth down conversions offensively to keep it moving.”

Port Townsend picked off two Pirates’ passes, with Nico Winegar pulling one down and Finnish exchange student Emil Makkula grabbing the other.

And Gaffney had praise for defensive tackle Dalen Ufford.

Vashon had a fullback that weighed about 240 pounds and Dalen stopped him multiple times up the middle.”

The Redhawks (2-0, 2-3) will play against Bellevue Christian (1-0, 2-2) at Sammamish High School next Saturday.

Sequim 51, Kingston 14

KINGSTON — The first-place Wolves cruised to a 37-0 halftime lead behind four first-half touchdown passes by senior quarterback Riley Cowan.

Cowan was 8 of 10 for 230 yards and the four TDs before being pulled early in the second quarter, according to Sequim assistant coach Dave Ditlefsen.

Head Coach Eric Wiker said theWolves were prepared for the Buccaneers.

“They played pretty well on offense and defense, in all aspects of the game,” he said.

Kyler Rollness caught six passes for 124 yards and a 29-yard TD pass to lead the Wolves’ wideouts.

In addition to the skill players, Wiker said the Wolves’ offensive line is playing well and Ben Cowan, Johnnie Young, Garret Hoesel and Joey Oliver all played well on defense.

“The O-line is executing at a high level,” Wiker said.

The win was the 100th at Sequim for Wolves coach Wiker (100-51 in 15 seasons).

“I’m not really a stat guy,” Wiker said. “I guess it means we’ve been playing at a pretty high level and I’ve been around long enough to be a part of it.”

Sequim (3-0, 5-0) controls its own destiny in the race for the Olympic League 2A Division title with a huge contest coming up Friday at Olympic (2-1, 2-3).

Neah Bay 54, Darrington 14

DARRINGTON — Meric Soeneke was plugged in as quarterback for the Red Devils and responded by throwing four touchdown passes and converting five PATs in a 54-14 win over Darrington.

“He made good decisions. He did well in executing the game plan,” said coach TJ Greene. Greene said the Red Devils had been struggling with their two-point conversions and converted six out of seven in Friday’s road win.

Soeneke took over for Josey Tyree, who Greene said was banged up.

Neah Bay erased all doubt early in this one, scoring 30 points in the second quarter to build up a 46-0 halftime lead.

Jay Brunk scored three touchdowns on passes from Soeneke, Joe Bain scored two touchdowns and Billy Parkin III had a 61-yard TD reception for the Red Devils.

Neah Bay (2-0, 3-2) has a huge road game coming up Friday at new league foe Naselle (2-0, 5-1). Naselle just clobbered Lummi 46-12.

“That game will tell us where we’re at,” Greene said.
