PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim, PA both win on the road; Forks crushes Tenino

BREMERTON — The Wolves didn’t even let a traffic accident rattle them as they got 262 yards rushing, two touchdowns and two interceptions on defense from Taig Wiker as the Wolves won a huge road game against Olympic to remain undefeated in Olympic League 2A Division play.

“They’re really good, that’s probably the fastest team we’ll ever see,” said Wolves’ head coach Eric Wiker.

Olympic got ahead 6-0, but the Wolves came back with a 9-yard pass from Riley Cowan to Kyler Rollness in the second quarter. The Trojans kicked a field goal to take a 9-7 lead into the half.

In the third, Sequim took control on a short Cowan touchdown run and a two-yard Wiker TD run to take a 21-9 lead into the fourth. Wiker added another touchdown in the fourth on a 19-yard run.

Wiker ended up rushing the ball a whopping 36 times for 262 yards. Cowan didn’t have one of his biggest games, passing 11 for 20 for 114 yards, but coach Wiker said this was somewhat by design.

Wiker said Cowan was calling a lot of run/pass options and run was working, so he kept feeding the ball to Wiker, who couldn’t be stopped all game by the Trojans.

“That’s been our M.O. all year. Everyone taking a role,” coach Wiker said. “[Cowan] is a great tream player. He leads by example by being selfless.”

In addition to Taig’s big game, the offensive line was huge, opening up all those holes for him to run through.

“We went through the film [on Saturday] and the O-line was blocking the right person the right way,” Wiker said.

With the win, Port Angeles sits tied with North Kitsap for second place in the Olympic League 2A Division.

On the way to the game, the bus carrying the team was involved in a traffic collision. None of the players or coaches in the bus were injured, but a new bus had to be sent from Sequim to pick up the team from Bremerton.

Sequim (4-0, 6-0) is now in the driver’s seat for a league championship, but there’s still a long way to go with two league games left. The Wolves next play at home at 7 p.m. Friday against Port Angeles (2-1, 2-4), coming off a 28-9 road win of their own five miles away over Bremerton.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders clamped down on defense against the Knights, allowing no points in the second half and bouncing back from a rough loss the week before against Olympic.

Garrett Edwards and Tyler Bowen did much of the damage on both sides of the ball for the Riders.

Edwards broke out for 153 yards from scrimmage, including a 78-yard run for a touchdown and a 27-yard reception for a TD. He rushed five times for 93 yards and caught five passes for 60 yards.

Bowen, not to be outdone, had two catches for 55 yards, including a 30-yard catch from Brenden Roloson-Hines and a 58-yard fumble recovery.

Bowen also had an interception and eight tackles. Edwards had 14 tackles on defense. The Riders were led on defense by Anton Kathol, who finished with 15 tackles and four quarterback sacks.

“All the guys who should be making tackles were making tackles,” Mann said.

The Riders and Knights scored all of their points in the first half. They knuckled down to a 0-0 tie in the second half.

“We knew our defense could stop this type of team,” said coach Troy Mann. “It was nice to see the aggression and the team not quit” after the Olympic loss.

Mann said that after that 55-6 loss, the Riders went back to basics, working on their mental strength.

Mann said the defense still “needs to sharpen our outside containment. The middle of the defensive line did an amazing job.”

Roloson-Hines finished the game rushing seven times for 65 yards, while passing 7-for-10 for 105 yards.

The Riders (2-1, 2-4) have a big challenge next Friday at Sequim (4-0, 6-0) in a Rainshadow Rivalry game.

“We’re going to have to play disciplined,” Mann said.

FORKS — The Spartans bounced back from a loss to Montesano in a big way, crushing Tenino 55-14 behind 136 yards and two touchdowns from tailback Tristan Pisani.

Forks played a solid all-around game after a 40-0 loss the previous week to powerhouse Montesano.

“We were still somehwat having a hangover [form the Montesano game],” said head coach Emil West. “Our first drive was a little lackluster. We got going right after that.”

“We’re back on track now it feels like now,” West said. He said the Montesano loss in on him. “I put a ton of pressure on the kids. When we play loose, we play well.”

Pisani had touchdown runs of 17 and 30 yards. On that 30-yarders, “he broke at least three big tackles in the open field,” said coach Emil West.

Brett Moody also rushed for 61 yards on three carries out of the wildcat, including a 48-yard TD run.

West also said Keith Thompson had a phenonemal game on defense with eight tackles and a sack from the strong safety position.

Cascade Christian 62, Chimacum 0

PORT TOWNSEND — Chimacum struggled against one of the more powerful teams in the Nisqually League, falling 62-0.

The Cowboys had 16 or 17 freshmen going up against a team that is undefeated in league and has only lost to 2A Steilacoom, said coach Chris Storm.

“We’re really going to try and focus on the next game and not dwell on the last,” Storm said.

The Cowboys (0-3, 1-5) have their third straight game against a private school next week, going up against Bellevue Christian (1-1, 2-3). That game will be at home at 7 p.m. Friday.
