BREMERTON — Gavin Velarde scored five touchdowns, including a 100-yard interception return and a 75-yard kickoff return, as Sequim beat Olympic on the road in a 48-26 shootout.
“I think they were prepared. They executed well. We’ve been really close to executing [like this] all season,” said coach Erik Wiker.
“I give credit to the team’s hard work this offseason,” he said.
Sequim (3-1, 5-2) moved into second place in the Olympic League with the win, the school’s first against Olympic since Oct. 13, 2011.
The Wolves have scored 95 points in their past two games, both wins.
Riley Cowan was 13 of 20 passing with two touchdowns. Velarde scored three rushing touchdowns, while Kyler Rollness caught two passes for 85 yards, including a 50-yard TD catch. Payton Glasser also had a touchdown catch. Tyler Conn ran 12 times for 88 yards.
Velarde now has a total of six kick returns for touchdowns this season, Wiker said.
His interception also came at a critical time in the game, near the end of the first half as Olympic was trailing 27-14 and driving for a potential touchdown.
Olympic continued to hang close after a touchdown in the third quarter to make it 34-20. But, Velarde broke the game open a second time by taking the kickoff back for a TD to give the Wolves a 41-20 lead.
Sequim hosts rival Port Angeles in the annual Rainshadow Rumble at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lummi 50, Crescent 6
PORT ANGELES – In a game shortened by lightning and ferry schedules, and featuring three touchdowns in 40 seconds, the Lummi Blackhawks showed why they’re the No. 1-ranked 1B team in the state, rolling past Crescent 50-6.
Coach Brian Shimko said he thought his team played well against a very strong opponent. He said Lummi had rolled up some huge scores against most of its opponents by halftime, while Crescent only gave up four scores and trailed 28-0 at the lightning-shortened half.
The game was hastily rescheduled and moved to Civic Field Monday night because of last week’s storms.
Undefeated Lummi was a big, fast, deep athletic team that has cracked 60 points three times this season.
“They fought hard. I thought we played well against a good team. We were able to move the ball,” Shimko said.
Lummi got off to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter. Crescent actually dominated the second quarter a bit, holding the ball most of the quarter. However, the Loggers stalled in the Blackhawks’ territory twice and weren’t able to punch it in.
Shimko said the Loggers had a first-and-goal three times and were in the red zone four times, but came away scoreless each time. Penalties really hurt the team.
“Our worst enemy all year has been penalties,” Shimko said.
Crescent (0-2, 3-4) had a pair of nice drives, the first featuring a 23-yard run by Eric Emery and a roughing the punter penalty against Lummi. McCabe Story had an interception to set up Crescent in Lummi territory. Emery had a step on a defender on a long pass from quarterback K.C. Spencer, but the Blackhawks defender was able to catch up and break up the pass. On both drives, Crescent moved the chains, but stalled in Lummi territory, pushed back by penalties and sacks.
The first half was halted with 3:35 to play because of a lightning delay. Then, because Lummi had to catch a ferry back home, the second half was shortened to 8-minute quarters, finally moving to a running clock in the second half. The Lummi team literally ran off the field as soon as the game was over.
Lummi started the first half with a 67-yard kick return by Caleb Revey. The point-after made it 36-0.
Then came a flurry of touchdowns. Lummi’s Raven Borsey began the exchange with a 50-yard run with 3:53 left in the third to make it 42-0.
On the ensuing kick, Crescent’s Robert Cox returned the favor with a spectacular 75-yard kick return, featuring a 360-degree spin move, making it 42-6 with 3:35 left in the quarter. Then Borsey came right back on the next kick with a 70-yard return for a TD at the 3:13 mark. A PAT made it 50-6.
Crescent next plays at Tulalip on Oct. 29.

Bremerton 51, Port Angeles 0
BREMERTON — The Roughriders ran into a buzzsaw on the road, getting overwhelmed by the Knights 51-0.
“We were flat and they got on us early and then there was no turning back. They just had their way,” said coach Bret Curtis.
Curtis said the unusual Monday night game might have affected his players. “It showed,” he said.
Port Angeles had 66 yards offensively on the night, highlighted by a 30-yard catch by Easton Joslin.
The Riders (0-4, 0-7) will look for an upset in the Rainshadow Rumble rivalry game at Sequim at 7 p.m. Friday.

Quilcene 44, Evergreen Lutheran 0
TACOMA — The Rangers pitched a shutout against the Eagles to set up a big game Saturday at Seattle Lutheran.
“We played really well defensively,” Quilcene coach Trey Beathard said.
“It’s our first time beating them since coach [Bryron] Wilson and I have been here [in three seasons], so we were kind of happy about that.
“They have a 250-pound fullback and he’s a load. I felt the defensive front coach Wilson set up played really, really well.”
Acea Such scored on a 59-yard TD run and a 32-yard pass reception from Andy Johnson for Quilcene.
“Acea had his best game of the season,” Beathard said. “He ran hard. And he did well defensively.”
Olin Reynolds scored on a 67-yard run and had a 92-yard interception return to cap the blowout.
“Olin is getting better and better,” Beathard said.
“He broke on that interception and made a great play.”
Quilcene (2-1, 5-1) visits Seattle Lutheran (2-1, 3-3) on Saturday in a game that will likely decide the SeaTac League’s second seed to the 1B Quad-District playoffs.
