PREP FOOTBALL: Sequim shuts down North Mason, leads postseason race; other area reports

BELFAIR — Sequim dominated North Mason offensively and defensively to keep itself in postseason position.

Freshman quarterback Riley Cowan tossed four first-half touchdowns, two to backup QB Nick Faunce and two more to sophomore speedster Gavin Velarde, as the Wolves (2-1, 3-1) rolled to a 42-6 first-half lead Friday.

Cowan finished 16 of 25 with 307 yards and the four scores.

“The game plan was to pass it on them,” Wolves coach Erik Wiker said.

“And we were very successul passing it on them.

Velarde also made a big play on special teams, returning a kickoff 81 yards for a TD after a touchdown by North Mason cut the Wolves’ lead to 21-6 with 8:43 to go until halftime.

“It helps to have dynamic players,” Wiker said.

Thomas Winfield added two field goals from 23 and 21 yards away in the first half.

Velarde triggered the running clock in the second half, taking a snap from center and going 72 yards for his fourth TD of the game in the third quarter.

The Wolves held the Bulldogs to 99 yards of total offense — 54 running and 45 passing.

“They had the same offense as before, so the scouting report was the same,” Wiker said.

“So we have a senior-loaded defense that watched them do that last year.

“That definitely helped.”

One of those seniors is free safety Kane Stoddard.

“He is probably our defensive MVP of the year,” Wiker said.

“He understands the defense well. He watches a lot of film.”

Wiker also said that it helped the Wolves that North Mason was without Cole Rinehart, “one of their best players.”

Sequim sits all alone in third place in Olympic League 2A. The top three teams advance to the playoffs.

The Wolves host Port Angeles (0-3, 1-5) in the Rainshadow Rumble rivalry game this Friday.

Klahowya 14, Chimacum 13

PORT TOWNSEND — Oh so close for the Cowboys.

Chimacum continues to battle as it seeks its first win since Oct. 2013.

In Friday night’s homecoming game against Klahowya, the Cowboys nearly knocked off Olympic League 1A foe Klahowya at Memorial Field.

That’s a considerable improvement over their 55-18 loss to the Eagles two weeks ago.

“We’re getting better. I know it doesn’t show in the win-loss column,” Chimacum coach Mike Dowling said.

“It was nice to see them be that resilient.

“There’s a lot of pride there.”

Chimacum’s defense, which has struggled against the pass this season, received a boost from the return of defensive backs Eoin Hartnett and Matthew Torres.

“Both of them play cornerback and they basically locked down the outside receivers,” Dowling said.

Chris Bainbridge scored twice for the Cowboys, both on passes from James Porter.

A missed PAT ended up being the difference.

Chimacum led 13-7 before a fourth-quarter turnover gave the ball to Klahowya at the Cowboys’ 13-yard line.

It was the closest of close calls that are becoming a little bit more common for Chimacum, which hasn’t won since October 2013.

“I honestly thought we were going to get it done [Friday],” Dowling said.

“We led for three quarters and found a way to give it away.

“We’ve got opportunities, we’re just not completing the deal.

“I know it sounds weird to say, being an 0-6 coach, but I love my team.”

Chimacum (0-4, 0-6) takes a ferry across Admiralty Inlet this Friday to face Coupeville (1-3, 1-6).

The Wolves edged the Cowboys 28-26 in Port Townsend last month.

TUMWATER — The Roughriders mustered just 110 total yards of total offense while allowing 439 yards in a nonleague loss to the Wolves.

Junior quarterback Christian Williams completed 6 of 6 passes for 284 yards and four TDs to power Black Hills’ attack.

Connor Furu added 10 carries for 100 rushing yards and two scores for the Wolves (1-0, 6-0), who received votes in The Associated Press Class 2A poll this week.

“I have give that team their due because they were pretty good,” Port Angeles coach Bret Curtis said.

“They had a pretty good passing attack.

“What we had trouble countering was their speed.”

Kellen Landry led Port Angeles (0-3, 1-5) with 15 carries for 66 rush yards and three receptions for 18 yards.

“Offensively, we’ve struggled the last few weeks,” Curtis said.

“We’ve had some inconsistency

“The line will execute a play one time, and then the next one we have a breakdown someplace else

“The consistency, that’s been our Achilles heel.”

Curtis was again happy that the Riders didn’t back down, even after trailing 34-0 at halftime.

“We’ve got a group of guys who are competitive and they don’t quit. They kept fighting until the last whistle.”

The Roughriders seek a better outcome against another pack of Wolves when they face rival Sequim (2-1, 4-1) in the Rainshadow Rumble this Friday in Sequim.

Port Townsend 44, Coupeville 0

COUPEVILLE — The Redhawks remained unbeaten by posting their fifth shutout in six games.

“The wind was blowing about 25 miles per hour, and we had the wind at our back and kicked off and just pinned them,” Port Townsend coach Nick Snyder said.

“They are a throwing team and they just couldn’t throw in the wind. Coupeville just had trouble moving the ball, and we kept getting good field position.”

Snyder said the defense was able to get after Coupeville quarterback Gabe Eck.

“Our pass rush was really, really strong last night,” Snyder said.

“Keegan [Khile] and Ezra [Easley] were getting in there, Kaiden Parcher played some good D-tackle for us and Hogey [David Hoglund] got in there a few times for us.”

The Redhawks (4-0, 6-0) scored five rushing touchdowns in the first half, three coming from Wesley Wheeler and two from Easley, to lead 35-0 at halftime.

“Wesley was running the ball hard up the middle and our line was blocking almost perfect for him,” Port Townsend quarterback David Sua said.

“We kind of struggled a little bit to the outside at first on a few plays, but we figured it out and Ezra got going.”

Sua found Carson Marx for a 14-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and Gerry KCoker added a 33-yard field goal in the second half to close out the scoring.

The Redhawks host Klahowya (3-1, 4-2) this Friday.

A win over the Eagles would clinch at least a share of the Olympic League 1A title.

The Loggers (0-2, 2-4) host Clallam Bay (0-1, 2-3) this Saturday.

Lummi (2-0, 4-2) next play at second-ranked Neah Bay on Friday.
