SEQUIM — Sequim’s defense came through again, shutting out Coupeville 41-0, the Wolves second straight blowout win against an Olympic League 1A opponent.
Last week Sequim beat Chimacum 43-6.
“The defense did really well all the way through the game, there were only a few minor mistakes,” Wolves coach Erik Wiker said of Friday’s game.
Senior quarterback Nick Faunce put Sequim on the board with an 13-yard touchdown run.
Freshman quarterback Riley Cowan then threw for two touchdowns later in the first half, a 34-yarder to Ethan Richmond and a 31-yarder to Gavin Velarde, to give the Wolves a commanding 21-0 lead.
Velarde finished with six catches for 120 yards. He also ran for 67 yards on four carries, including an 11-yard touchdown.
“I think we played well, but we have a lot of things to correct,” Wiker said.
“We had peaks and valleys. The peaks were really good and the valleys were medium-bad, but we’ve got to work on those.”
Arnold Black ran eight times for 54 yards, including a 15-yard TD.
Kicker Thomas Winfield hit 6 of 7 extra point attempts.
“The kicking game is looking really good,” Wiker said.
Sequim (2-0) travels to Kingston (0-2) on Friday, the Olympic League 2A Division opener for each team.

KENT — An already short-handed Clallam Bay squad lost the game and standout freshman Clayton Willis to a knee injury that will keep him out at least a week.
“We started off scoring first, and I thought we were going to keep pouring it on, but it was hot there on the turf and our lack of depth hurt us,” Bruins coach Cal Ritter said.
“Willis did quite well for us, served as a workhorse for us offensively and made plays on defense, but he got hurt at the end of the third [or] beginning of the fourth quarter.”
Clallam Bay had a chance to tie in the final minutes.
“They scored and we stopped them on the [two-point] conversion, so they were up eight,” Ritter said.
“We drove it down to their 25[-yard line] and we had a fourth-and-12.
“We fumbled it. Kyle Keys picked it up and got close to the first down as he could before he fumbled, so we turned it over with 42 seconds left.”
Ritter said the highlight for the Bruins came on a 63-yard interception return for a score by eighth-grader Ramon Tinoco in the third quarter.
“He did a real good job for us in coverage as a defensive back all game and made that big play,” Ritter said.
Ritter also praised senior quarterback/linebacker Alan Greene.
“I can’t say enough about him,” Ritter said.
“He’s solid. He’s really the eyes on the field for me, and it’s his first year at quarterback.
“He did a great job coming up and making stops at linebacker, too.”
Sam Signor and Keys, who was playing with a groin injury, also drew raves.
“Sam and Kyle were great offensively, and Kyle wasn’t anywhere near 100 percent,” Ritter said.
With Willis out, the Bruins are now down to nine players on their roster.
“I told the kids if we can suit up at least eight who want to wear the black and gold then we will keep it going,” Ritter said.
“They want to keep playing.”

Port Townsend 44, Bellevue Christian 0
PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend’s stout defense produced its second shutout in less than a week with a 44-0 nonleague stomping of Bellevue Christian at Memorial Field.
The Redhawks (2-0) blistered Port Angeles 49-0 in the season opener last Friday.
In the first two games of the young football season, Port Townsend has outscored its opponents 93-0.
Thursday’s blowout wasn’t much different than last week’s.
“The linebackers, most of them are seniors, except for [sophomore] Detrius Kelsall, but David Sua and Keegan Khile are doing a great job and Ezra Easley is playing well behind them,” Port Townsend coach Nick Snyder said
“Detrius is running well on the back side, and our secondary, [Jacob] Ralls and Carson Marx, are playing well in coverage.”
Kelsall returned from a bruised collarbone that sidelined him during the second half of the Port Angeles game.
The Vikings hit on two long pass plays in the early going, but Snyder said the Redhawks adjusted defensively and came up with fourth-down stops to stall the drives.
Port Townsend led 7-0 after one quarter and 28-0 at halftime.
“Sua had a phenomenal game for us offensively, running and throwing the ball,” Snyder said.
“[Wesley] Wheeler got untracked for us in the second half and ran well, and Detrius and Kyle Blankenship all contributed.”
Ralls also scored on a long punt return.
“I thought they [the Vikings] were a pretty talented team coming in, so I though the effort was impressive,” Snyder said.
“We came out of the locker room at half with more intensity than last week.
“We had another big lead, and these Thursday games can be tough because of the short week, but we were pretty focused.”
The Redhawks pay a visit to Klahowya (1-1) to open Olympic League 1A Division play Friday.
