PREP FOOTBALL UPDATE: Port Townsend has chances but falls against hard-running Klahowya; Sequim falls in nonleaguer; North Kitsap shuts out Port Angeles and more scores

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend couldn’t convert from 1-yard out on its first and final possesions and couldn’t stop Klahowya running back Hunter Wallis a 27-6 defeat Friday at Memorial Field.

The Redhawks were stuffed on a QB sneak on 4th down on their opening drive and fumbled at the goalline while trailing 20-6 in the fourth quarter to end any chance at a comeback.

Port Townsend led 6-0 after a beautiful 45-yard TD strike up the right sideline from Noa Montoya to Nico Winegar to open the second quarter. The Redhawks were tied at halftime and trailed 13-6 entering the fourth.

But Wallis gained 181 of his 243 rushing yards in the second half, including two fourth-quarter touchdowns, as Klahowya (4-0, 6-1) remained in first place in the Class 1A Olympic/Nisqually League.

Port Townsend (2-2, 3-5) is not eliminated from the postseason, as yet. But the Redhawks would need to win out against rival Chimacum next week as visitors in the Quimper Quarrel at Memorial Field and upset No. 7 Cascade Christian on Nov. 3 — and get some help via Klahowya (4-0, 6-1) wins over Cascade Christian this Thursday and Bellevue Christian in week nine.

Oh, and Bellevue Christian also would have to lose against Charles Wright next week.

Port Townsend’s focus now turns to extending the win streak over rival Chimacum to seven games (the teams played twice in 2014 and 2014).

A full game story with quotes and photos will run in Sunday’s Peninsula Daily News.

HOQUIAM — The fourth-ranked 1A Grizzlies edged out the Wolves in a matchup of unbeaten teams Friday at Olympic Stadium.

Sequim was balanced offensively, rushing for 245 yards, 180 of them from sophomore Taig Wiker while senior quarterback Riley Cowan threw for 235 yards, two TDs and three interceptions.

The Grizzlies returned one interception for a touchdown, that coming early in the third quarter as Hoquiam erased Sequim’s 21-14 halftime lead and took a 35-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Wolves had one last possession in the final minute, but Cowan was intercepted inside the Grizzlies 10-yard line.

Sequim (5-0, 7-1) will wrap the regular season at Bremerton next week.
