PREP FOOTBALL UPDATE: Port Townsend pounds Vashon; Wiker gets 100th win at Sequim; Olympic blows out Port Angeles

PORT TOWNSEND — Noa Montoya tossed three touchdowns to Dylan Tracer and ran in two more scores as Port Townsend put a solid hurtin’ on Vashon in a 40-13 Nisqually/Olympic League contest at Memorial Field on Friday.

“Like I said before, it was all of our guys getting involved,” Redhawks coach Patrick Gaffney said.

“Noa played a really good game. He threw a couple of touchdowns, ran for a TD and he had another called back on a punt return.

“Dylan Tracer had a big night, he scored a couple of times on passes and ran for well over 100 yards. And Jerome Reaux Jr. had some big runs like he always does.”

Gaffney said Maxpreps.com showed Reaux entered the game leading the league in rushing (348 yards on an average of 15.1 yards per carry). The freshman speedster only added to those numbers in the big win as the Redhawks’ flexbone attack ran over and through the Pirates defense.

“We had much of our success running right at them,” Gaffney said.

“We got great blocking out of Murphy Klemann again. “He’s like a skinny guard out there playing wide receiver.”

Port Townsend only conceded one score defensively, that one coming late in the contest when Gaffney said he was playing as many reserves as his 19-player dressed roster would allow.

Vashon’s other score came when Port Townsend fumbled in the endzone on a punt attempt.

“Defensively we were steady and we didn’t allow any big plays,” Gaffney said. “We made them turn it over on downs a lot and got a lot of third and fourth down conversions offensively to keep it moving.”

Port Townsend picked off two Pirates’ passes, with Nico Winegar pulling one down and Finnish exchange student Emil Makkula grabbing the other.

And Gaffney had praise for defensive tackle Dalen Ufford.

“Vashon had a fullback that weighed about 240 pounds and Dalen stopped him multiple times up the middle,” Gaffney said.

The Redhawks (2-0, 2-3) will play against Bellevue Christian (1-0, 2-2) at Sammamish High School next Saturday.

Sequim 51, Kingston 14

KINGSTON — The Wolves cruised to a 37-0 halftime lead behind four first-half touchdown passes by senior quarterback Riley Cowan.

Cowan was 8 of 10 for 230 yards and the four TDs before being pulled early in the second quarter, according to Sequim assistant coach Dave Ditlefsen.

Kyler Rollness caught six passes for 124 yards and a 29-yard TD pass to lead the Wolves’ wideouts.

The win was the 100th at Sequim for Wolves coach Erik Wiker (100-51 in 15 seasons).

First-place Sequim (3-0, 5-0) controls its own destiny in the race for the Olympic League 2A Division title with a huge contest coming up Friday at Olympic (2-1, 2-3).

Olympic 55, Port Angeles 6

PORT ANGELES — Let’s hope Saturday night’s dance goes better for the Port Angeles Roughriders than Friday’s homecoming football game.

The Riders again made things difficult for themselves by making it easy on their opponents in a 55-6 thrashing at the hands of the Olympic Trojans at Civic Field on Friday.

Olympic scored twice off Port Angeles turnovers — the Riders combined to throw four interceptions and fumbled once on the night.

Port Angeles head coach Troy Mann had few words for his team in the Riders’ traditional post-game meeting — beyond instructing his charges to quickly board the bus back to the high school.

And he declined to discuss the game with a Peninsula Daily News reporter after the game.

It was that difficult of an evening and that ugly of an outcome.

Olympic quickly took control of the game, chewing up big chunks of yardage through the air on the game’s opening drive. The Trojans moved the ball 93 yards on seven plays, capped by a Zeke Gillick’s 42-yard touchdown pass to Darrelle White.

Olympic forced a Port Angeles punt, but the Trojans muffed the catch, recovering the ball in their own endzone for what Riders’ players and coaches believed to be a safety.

But in high school football, a kicked ball remains a kick until a player gains possession of the ball, so the play was ruled a touchback and Port Angeles missed out on a potentially momentum-swinging turn of events early.

Olympic took advantage, moving the ball at will with running backs Malcom Dewalt (speed to the outside) and Cameron Bailey (runs up the middle), before Gillick hit Adam Johnson in stride up the right sideline for a 40-yard TD pass.

Gillick at that point was 5 for 5 for 115 yards passing and the two scores, exploiting a Riders’ secondary without ball-hawking defender Derek Bowechop due to an injury.

And that score effectively ended the competitive portion of the contest.

Dewalt added short TD runs to pad the Trojans’ lead to 28-0 with a minute to go before halftime.

And Olympic scored again on one of the strangest plays of the season just ahead of the break.

Port Angeles quarterback Brenden Roloson-Hines was chased and dumped a short pass to running back Trevor Shumway. Shumway ran with the ball behind the Riders’ line of scrimmage and pitched the ball forward — not allowed once the ball already has been thrown once — straight into the arms of an on-rushing White.

White collected the ball and raced in for an interception return touchdown — the Trojans choosing to decline the illegal forward pass penalty.

Things didn’t pick up after the break for the Riders.

Roloson-Hines was unable to gather a high snap and the ball bounced into the hands of Olympic’s Trent Feistner who returned the fumble for a 10-yard TD to trigger the 40-point running clock.

Shumway snapped the shutout for Port Angeles when he jumped a shorty pass and out ran the Trojans for an 80-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter.

The Riders (1-1, 1-4) visit Bremerton (1-1, 2-3) on Friday. The Knights edged North Mason 28-27 on Friday.
