POULSBO — Freshman Gavin Velarde scored two kick-return touchdowns to account for Sequim’s scoring in a 33-13 defeat at the hands of the eighth-ranked North Kitsap Vikings on Friday night.
Velarde slipped fielding the ball on the soaked turf surface but recovered to take the opening kick back 96 yards for an early 6-0 lead.
North Kitsap (1-0, 4-0) answered back with three first-half rushing touchdowns for a 20-6 lead at the break.
The Vikings’ ferocious defense neutralized the Wolves on both sides of the ball all night long.
Sequim (1-1, 3-1) tallied just 11 yards rushing on 22 carries in the first half and just 47 yards of total offense at halftime.
North Kitsap tacked on two second-half scores and Velarde returned a kick 92 yards for the last Wolves points with 1:23 to play.
Sequim’s leading rusher Ty Jones tallied 10 carries for just 11 yards. Chris Whitaker had two carries for 8 yards and North Kitsap limited Wolves quarterback Miguel Moroles to 15 rushes for 4 yards. He also was 6 of 8 for 48 yards and an interception.
Kyle North had 15 carries for 135 yards for the Vikings to lead all rushers.
Port Angeles 38, Bremerton 34
BREMERTON — Port Angeles scored last to win a back-and-forth Olympic League shootout on the road when Sam Burton tackled Calvin Cardwell inside the 5-yard line as time expired.
The score was 21-18 in Bremerton’s (0-2, 2-2) favor heading into the fourth quarter. The teams traded scores from there until the Roughriders (1-1, 3-1) scored on a 6-yard pass from Ryan Rodocker to Caleb West with just over a minute remaining to take a 38-34 lead that held up when the clock ran out of time.
Clallam Bay 62, Muckleshoot 20
AUBURN — The Bruins led 14-6 after one quarter, but coach Cal Ritter said he wanted them to play much better in the second quarter.
Clallam Bay (3-1) obeyed, racking up 40 points in the quarter to pull away and put the running clock in effect before intermission.
The defense was particularly offensive in the second quarter, scoring on a interception return, a fumble recovery and a safety.
Neah Bay 58, Lyle-Wishram 6
LYLE — The top-ranked Red Devils jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised from there.
Freshman quarterback Rwehabura Munyagi Jr. threw five touchdown passes for Neah Bay (4-0).
Coupeville 29, Port Townsend 21
COUPEVILLE — The Redhawks suffered through a rough first half that proved to be too much to overcome.
The Wolves built a 29-14 halftime lead and then kept Port Townsend (1-1, 2-2) off the scoreboard until the final minutes of the game.
The win puts Coupeville (2-0, 3-1) at the top of the Olympic League’s 1A Division.
Klahowya 36, Chimacum 26
PORT TOWNSEND — The Cowboys had an offensive flurry at the end of the game for their highest scoring output of the season.
The Eagles (1-1, 1-3) controlled the ball in the first half. Chimacum (0-2, 0-4) reversed the trend in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Klahowya’s 21-6 halftime advantage.
Rochester 25, Forks 18
ROCHESTER — The Warriors (2-0, 2-2) scored in the final minute to edge the Spartans (0-2, 1-3) in Evergreen League play Friday night.
