PREP GIRLS BASKETALL: Port Angeles, Sequim girls remain hot

BREMERTON — Port Angeles hit 12 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 77-20 drubbing of Bremerton in an Olympic League 2A Division girls basketball game.

The Sequim girls remain right behind Port Angeles for the league lead with a 57-42 win Friday over Olympic.

The Roughriders scored 31 points in the first quarter Friday night and built up a lead of 58-13 by halftime. They cruised in the second half with the reserves getting playing time with a huge lead.

Port Angeles ended the game with 14 3-pointers, shooting 48.3 percent from beyond the arc. Eight different girls hit treys in the win.

“The early scoring consisted partly of points in transition off our press and our 1-3-1 zone and partly 3-point shots (five made in the first quarter). Our good shooting continued in the second quarter when we made seven threes,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

Madison Cooke and Jaida Wood led the Riders with 17 point each, with Cooke shooting a perfect 5 for 5 on her inside shots. Aeverie Politika scored 10. Ten Roughriders scored.

The win keeps Port Angeles all alone in first place in the Olympic League 2A Division, a half-game ahead of Sequim.

The Roughriders (4-0, 6-1) played a good 4A Hazen team (8-2 overall) Saturday. Results of that game were not known before press deadline.

Wiker scored 26 in Friday’s win.

“We struggled with some turnovers and our free throw shooting. Olympic played hard the whole game, but we took a stronger lead in the third quarter, buckled down defensively and held our composure,” said coach Linsay Rapelje.

The Wolves went into the break clinging to a 23-20 lead, but outscored the Trojans 34-22 in the second half.

In addition to Wiker’s big game, “Jayla Julmist was a beast on the boards,” said Rapelje. Julmist scored seven points, and had another great all-around game, pulling down 15 rebounds, made eight steals and blocked five shots.Melissa Porter had seven points and seven rebounds, while Hope Glasser scored nine while pulling down eight rebounds, and Jessica Dietzman had seven boards.

Glasser and Bobbi Sparks also contributed beyond the box score, according to their coach.
