PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls basketball team went on an 18-3 run late in the third and through most of the fourth quarter to blow open a tense, tight game against Kingston, going on to win 61-48 to improve to 4-2 in Olympic League play.
The final score didn’t show how close this game was for 3½ quarters. Kingston hit a lot of 3-pointers, especially early in the game, to stick close with the Roughriders, who were extremely efficient inside with post Lindsay Smith going off for 31 points, her biggest production of the season. She added seven rebounds, six of them on the offensive boards, and seven assists.
“They were exactly who we thought they were,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “That’s a dangerous team. They’re not just one or two shooters or one or two drivers. They’re legit.”
Port Angeles won by 13 despite not hitting a single 3-point shot. In fact, the Riders only took seven 3-pointers. Kingston made eight 3-pointers, shooting a respectable 31 percent on its threes (8-for-26).
The difference? Free throws. The Riders shot 19-for-33 on free throws while the Bucs were 1-for-12. Many of those free throws came in the fourth quarter when Port Angeles drew foul after foul in the paint.
“We know we can go inside and we need to value that and make it our identity,” Poindexter said. The Riders dominated the offensive boards 17 to 10.
Smith alone shot 15 free throws, making nine. Poindexter said it appeared the Bucs got a little tired on defense in the fourth quarter and started fouling.
The Bucs were down just 38-35 late in the third quarter when Port Angeles began its big run, aided by a technical on Kingston coach Charles Deam that seemed to give the Riders a lot of momentum. Port Angeles built the lead to 56-38 with two minutes left in the game.
Lexie Smith scored eight to go along with eight rebounds and five steals. Sariah Doherty each scored eight and Morgan Politika six. Teanna Clark had five points, five steals and four assists.
Port Angeles (4-2, 7-5) next plays at a tough North Mason (5-2, 8-3) team at 5:30 p.m. Friday with a chance to move in to second place in the Olympic League.

The Riders started strong with a solid 716 and then posted a program record of 768 in the second game to earn two points.
Although the team dropped both Baker games to the strong Trojan team, it was the highest match pin count all season for Port Angeles.
Xoey Penn’s new personal high scores of 196 and 198 paced the team.
“The control Xoey showed in the match was very impressive,” said coach Rebecca Gundersen. “She bowled a clean game two and only left two open frames all day.”
Zoey Van Gordon was close behind with scores of 178 and 189.
Also setting new personal bests were Ivy Powless with a 168 and Brooklyn McKnight with a 165.
