BURLINGTON — Sequim’s Jack Shea shot rounds of 75 and 82 to finish in a tie for 13th at the prestigious 35th annual Bill Egbers Memorial Tournament at Skagit Golf & Country Club.
Bellarmine Prep, a Class 4A powerhouse from Tacoma, won the team title for the second consecutive year.
The Lions’ Joe Highsmith earned medalist honors with an even-par-total of 142, including a two-under-par 69 in the opening portion of the two-round tournament.
“It’s like these kids’ Masters event,” Shea’s dad and Wolves boys golf coach Bill Shea said
“You have to qualify for it based on your season results either as an individual or as a team, you’re held to PGA Tour dress standards, it’s a pretty big day.”
Shea qualified as an individual after finishing atop the Olympic League leader board.
His Sequim teammates also qualified to play upon winning the Olympic League title.
Shea shot a four-over-par 71 in Friday’s morning round to make the cut and qualify for 18 more holes in the afternoon.
“He played a really good round,” Bill Shea said.
“He made one little mistake and made a triple [bogey] on a par-3.”
Shea’s 82 in the second round was similar to many of the other afternoon results.
“The second round I think all the kids were getting tired out there,” Bill Shea said.
“Walking 36 holes in 70-plus degree weather is exhausting and the scores naturally get a little higher.”
Shea was the lone Sequim golfer to make the cut.
Freshman Blake Wiker fired an 89, Jade Arnold and Liam Payne shot rounds of 93, and Josiah Carter notched a 94.
“Conditions were extremely tough,” Bill Shea said.
“The greens were extremely hard and probably the fastest I’ve ever seen at this event.
“There was a real premium on hitting it in the fairway off the tee. If you hit the rough with your tee shot there was no way you were going to be able to stop your second shot on the green.”
As a result, the cut which is normally in the upper 70s was 84.
Chimacum golfers Marcus Bufford and Chris Bainbridge also missed the cut.
Bainbridge shot an 87, while Bufford was two back at 89.
Sequim will host the boys and girls 1A/2A Olympic League Golf Championships at Cedars at Dungeness on Tuesday.
