TACOMA — The Port Angeles soccer girls continued their trend in recent years of fading a bit toward the end of regular season and then getting red-hot in the postseason with 9-1 win over Tyee in the first round of the District 3 Tournament.
The Roughriders even gave up the first goal of the match, when they allowed Tyee to dribble the ball for 65 yards and cross to un unmarked player, who kicked the ball in for a goal.
“Horrible start to a district game. We gave them a goal with sloppy team defense,” said coach Scott Moseley.
The Riders showed their explosiveness, however, bouncing back in a huge hurry, taking the lead with two quick goals in 11 minutes. They scored four goals over the first 28 minutes of the match to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Emma Albright scored two goals, Delaney Wenzl scored two and tallied an assist, Millie Long had a goal and two assists, Krysten McGuffey, Mia Gagnon and Lucah Folden all had a goal and an assist and Bailee Larson scored a goal.
Long’s score was her 21st goal of the year, while McGuffey’s was her 12th.
With this win, the Riders have scored 68 goals in 17 matches.
“I was proud of how the team rallied after being down 1-0 early. It was a team effort offensively, with seven girls scoring and five girls getting assists,” Moseley said. “The big challenge will be to have a breakthrough game versus Fife, which is a traditionally very strong team.”
Port Angeles (12-5) is now out of the loser-out phase of the district tournament. The Riders travel to Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood at 7 p.m. Tuesday against powerhouse Fife (16-2-1). The winner goes to the state 2A tournament while the loser goes to the consolation bracket with a chance to still qualify for state.
Sequim 5, Highline 2
TACOMA — Sequim bounced back after losing a two-goal lead, scoring three quick goals to beat Highline in the Wolves’ opening match of the District 3 Tournament.
The Wolves got up 2-0, but Highline scored two goals to tie it. The Wolves responded with three goals, “in like five to 10 minutes,” said coach Derek Vander Velde.
“The girls fought back really hard,” he said.
Hope Glasser, Jessica Deitzman and Daisy Ryan scored goals for the Wolves, while Hannah Wagner forced a Highline own-goal on a cross in front of the Pirates’ net.
Also scoring a goal was Abby Schroeder, who returned to the Wolves after being out for several weeks after she sustained a concussion in a Port Angeles game.
“She was cleared to play last week. She was only in there for two minutes, after she scored, I pulled her,” Vander Velde said.
Picking up assists were Ryan and Yana Hoesel.
The Wolves (5-7-0, 8-8-1), who have now won seven out of eight after starting league play 0-6, play White River (9-0-4, 14-1-4) at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Franklin Pierce High School. The winner goes to state, while the loser is still alive in the consolation bracket.
