BELLEVUE — Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson, just a freshman, finished fourth in her race, running in the girls’ varsity fifth and sixth race at the Bellevue Cross Country Invitational.

Larson finished with a time of 20:09. Her teammate Madelyn Dougherty finished 16th in the same race out of 77 runners with a time of 21:02.

The Roughrider boys were led by Gabe Long, who finished with a time of 18:08, just ahead of teammate Thomas Shaw at 18:09. They finished 32nd and 33rd in the boys’ varsity fifth and sixth race.

“It was encouraging to see the new runners tap into their potential on this fast course,” said senior Dougherty.

“This was a really exciting race, it wasn’t about how well you could run hills or jump obstacles, but about how hard you could push yourself,” said freshman Katie Cobb.

More than 1,000 runners competed from 36 high schools around Washington.

Volleyball

Sequim, Port Angeles at Monarch Challenge

LONGVIEW — The Sequim volleyball girls won their pool at the Monarch Challenge Tournament at Mark Morris High School, then lost two very close matches in the elimination games.

Sequim won its first match Saturday over River Ridge 25-14, 25-23. The Wolves then split with Kalama 17-25, 25-18 and with Battle Ground 25-16, 23-25. Finishing pool play 1-0-2, the Wolves won their pool due to the tiebreaker of scoring the most points.

Sequim then had two tight matches in a row, losing to W.F. West 25-22, 24-26, 14-16, then to Woodland 23-25, 24-26.

Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said many of the teams at the tournament are state qualifying squads and that the Wolves played well against them.

“It really helped us because those are some pretty good teams,” she said.

The Port Angeles volleyball girls attended the same tournament. They were unable to pull off a win.

The Riders played five matches against River Ridge, Hanford, King’s Way, Woodland and Timberline.

Devin Edwards led the Roughriders with 12 kills, while Natalie Steinman had 11 kills and Aeverie Politika had eight kills on the day. Brennan Gray had four aces and 35 digs, while Steinman 23 assists and 23 digs. Michelle Alvarez had 12 digs and Nacia Bohman 13 assists.

On Thursday, the Wolves lost to first-place North Kitsap 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.

The Vikings are undefeated on the season. “We didn’t play that badly, they just have a lot of firepower,” said Webber-Heilman.

Arlene Law had five blocks and eight kills for the Wolves.

The Roughriders (0-5, 0-6) next play at Sequim (2-2, 3-2) at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
