RAINIER — Forks freshman Keira Johnson finished fifth at the 2B District 4 Cross Country meet held Saturday at Rainier High School.

Runners from 17 schools competed in the event, which is the completion of postseason for cross country. There will be no state cross country meet due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Johnson ran a time of 22 minutes, 2 seconds, almost exactly one minute off of first place. Senior Karen Ensastegui-Salazar, who twice went to the state cross country meet for the Spartans and has been running for Forks schools since the seventh grade, finished 18th. Her time was not recorded. Kendall Marshall, another freshman for the Spartans, finished 28th with a time of 27:04.

For the boys, the Spartans’ William Perez finished 14th with a time of 16:20. The race was 2.66 miles, and the winning time was 14:12. Cross country meets are normally 5K — about 3.1 miles.

Track and field

KINGSTON — The East Jefferson track and field team participated in its season-opening jamboree at Kingston High School on Saturday.

East Jefferson’s Tusker Behrenfeld won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 31 feet, 1½ inches. He also placed second in the javelin with a throw of 135-8, ahead of third place East Jefferson freshman Reid Martin (88-6).

East Jefferson took the top three spots in the girls’ shot put with Gina Brown taking first with a put of 29-10, Ava Vaughan-Mifsud second (25-2) and Melody Douglas third (22-6½). Vaughan-Mifsud also took second in the javelin with a throw of 52-8.

Indigo Gould took second in the boys’ long jump with an 11-4 effort. On the girls side, the long jump was won by Aurin Asbell with a distance of 13-0. Lia Poore took third with a jump of 10-9. Asbell and Poore also 1-2 in the triple jump with respective jumps of 29-5½ and 27-0.

The 100-meter dash was won by East Jefferson’s Jerome Reaux in 12.5. Freshman Addy Asbell won the 100-meter girls’ race at 14.6.

Max Allworth-Miles finished second in the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:53.9. Sebastian Manza was third in 5:10.0 and Ben Martin was ninth (6:16.9).

The East Jefferson girls took first, second and fourth with Camryn Hines winning in 6:02.4, followed by freshmen Aliyah Yearian (6:03.9). Tadu Dollarhide was fourth (6:46.3).

The meet concluded with the 4×400 relay, which was won by both the East Jefferson boys (Reaux, Manza, Martin, Allworth-Miles in 4:05.2) and girls (Addy Asbell, Hines, Yearian, Dollarhide in 5:07.9).
