PREP ROUNDUP: Forks spikers roar back from 2-0 hole; Sequim, PA soccer win

FORKS — The Spartans roared back from a 2-0 hole in a 229-point marathon to beat Montesano 3-2 (21-25, 25-27, 26-24, 28-26, 15-12) to remain undefeated and tied for first place in Evergreen 1A League play.

“I am so proud of the girls on their win. It is so amazing to see and feel them believing in themselves and their team mates on the court,” said coach Jenn LeDuke.

“We never gave up whatsoever. Even when losing the first two games, we stayed positive and controlled our emotions and pressure we were feeling. When the score was 26-26, during the fourth game, the thought of messing up in any way was terrifying, but the trust within my team helped. We are definitely coming together very well and we’re only getting better,” said Rian Peters, who led the team with 11 kills along with Elliahna Kilmer.

Britney Dean had eight kills, while Natalie Lausche had six. Myah Rondeau had seven digs and Julia Lausche had 28 assists.

Forks’ (3-0, 7-2) next match is huge, as they travel to Elma (3-0, 5-4) Tuesday to play for undisputed first place in the Evergreen 1A League.

Kingston 3, Port Angeles 0

KINGSTON — Port Angeles lost on the road to Kingston 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-11).

Aeverie Politika and Emi Halberg had four kills each for the Riders, while Nacia Bohman had six digs and eight assists.

Kennedy Bruch, McKenzie Musalek, Emma Olson, Aeverie and Emi all added three digs each.

The Riders (0-8, 0-9) hosts Klahowya (5-0, 7-3) at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Sequim 3, Bremerton 0

BREMERTON — The Wolves shut out Bremerton to stay within striking distance of North Kitsap for the league lead.

Sequim (7-1, 9-1) next plays at Olympic (2-6, 2-8) on Tuesday.

Girls Soccer

Port Angeles 6, Kingston 1

KINGSTON — The Roughrider girls got a hat trick from Millie Long, quickly and emphatically bouncing back from a huge upset loss against Sequim to wallop Kingston 6-1 on the road.

Thursday’s win keeps the third-place Riders within striking distance of Olympic and North Kitsap. Port Angeles is just two points behind Olympic and one point behind North Kitsap.

“While we could have played better at times, the girls worked hard to earn the goals and get the win,” said coach Scott Moseley. “We still hold some of season goals in our hands. Play well and we could challenge the top teams as the season winds down.”

The Riders got their first goal when a Kyrsten McGuffey shot went wide, but the rebound was gathered by Bailee Larsen who played it in front of the goal to Millie Long, who booted the ball in for a goal. McGuffey put the Riders ahead 2-0 when she won the ball from 30 yards out took a dribble hit a long shot from 25 yards out over the Kingston goalkeeper.

Long scored the next two goals to give her 12 for the year. Powerful-legged Delaney Wenzl finished the first half scoring with a 30-yard free kick over the goalie’s head.

The Riders ended their scoring in the 2nd half with McGuffey scoring on a 20-yard left-footed shot for her second tally of the match and her 10th of the year.

Larson had a good game with two assists while Long had one assist. Madi Roening picked up the win in goal.

The Riders (6-2-0 16 points, 8-3-0) host a very good Klahowya (4-0-0, 11-1-0) team in a non-league game at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Sequim 3, Bremerton 0

BREMERTON — Watch out, Olympic League 2A, the Wolves are getting hot.

After struggling through the first half of the league schedule, going 0-6 with four of those losses by shootout or by one goal, the Wolves won their second straight by a shutout, beating the Knights 3-0.

That win puts the Wolves into fourth place with eight points in league play, which would qualify them for the postseason.

“The girls are staying really positive and taking it one game at a time,” said head coach Derek Vandervelde. “They haven’t stopped at all and now they’re finding a way to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Hannah Wagner had a goal assisted by Hope Glasser, while Glasser scored a goal with an assist to Wagner. Natalia James also had a goal. Olivia Hare had the shutout in goal.

Sequim (2-6-0 8 points, 3-7-1) has a tough challenge this week, playing at first-place Olympic (7-1 20 points, 10-2) and then hosting second-place North Kitsap (6-1 19 points, 7-3-1) on Thursday.

Chimacum 6, Forks 0

FORKS — The Cowboys won their fifth match of the year, blanking Forks 6-0.

Grace Johnson had a pair of goals, while Clare Johnson, Scylla Glanz, Grace Yaley and Katie Clark all scored goals. Clark and Meghan Ejde got the shutout in goal.

Chimacum (2-2, 5-6) next plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Port Townsend (0-4, 1-10) in an Olympic League 1A Division match.

Forks (1-0, 2-5) next plays at Elma at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls Swimming

Port Angeles 115, Kingston 55

KINGSTON — The Roughrider swimmers easily cruised past Kingston, winning eight events even without Natalie Cole, who was out sick.

Felicia Che was a double event winner. She took the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 5.55 seconds and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.79. Her 100 backstroke time was good enough to be a district qualifying time.

Other first place finishes include:

200 Medley Relay — (Kiara Schmitt, Emma Weller, Che and Sierra Hunter), 2:07.59

200 individual medley — Sierra Hunter, 2:39.87

50 freestyle — Schmitt, 27.00

100 freestyle — Sage Hunter, 1:03.91

Port Angeles’ (4-1, 4-2) next meet is at home against Bremerton (2-3, 2-3) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

North Kitsap 125, Sequim 45

SEQUIM — Despite being outpointed by a powerful North Kitsap squad, coach Bob Pease said it was Sequim’s best meet of the season, with several swimmers putting up season-best times.

Sonja Govertsen won the 50-yard freestyle, with a season-best time of 25.35 seconds, improving her state qualifying time.

Govertsen also improved on her state-qualifying time in the 100 freestyleat 56:55 secons, coming in second to the defending state champion Eleanor Beers.

The 200 freestyle relay team (Govertsen, Jasmine Itti, Sidney Swanson, Mai Coffman) came in second, qualifying for state with a time of 1:48.32.

Mia Coffman missed state by 0.6 of a second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.58 and the 400 freestyle relay team of Govertsen, Itti, Meguire Vandervelde and Coffman missed state by 2.5 second witha time of 4:04.66. Pease said this team can definitely make up that 2.5 seconds and make it to state.

Sidney Swanson also had her season-best time in the 100 breaststroke witha time of 1:20.90.

Sequim (2-2-1) next swims at Klahowya (0-5) on Thursday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders beat Kingston 6-1 as the doubles teams swept the Buccaneers and the Riders got singles wins from Hayden Woods and Jadon Seibel.

Forks girls win Evergreen 1A

HOQUIAM — The Forks cross-country girls team won at the Evergreen 1A meet, with Spartan Madelyn Archibald taking first place with a time of 22 minutes, 5 seconds.

Archibald had to sprint to win this meet as she beat second-place runner Valerie Roloff of Hoquiam by just three seconds.

Archibald’s teammates Karen Ensastegui finished fifth with a time of 23:11 and Melisa Galindo finished sixth with a time of 23:12.

The Forks boys got two top-10 finishes. Wesley Camacho finished sixth with a time of 18:49, while Matthew Larson finished eighth with a time of 19:07. The Forks boys finished second out of four teams.
