FORKS — The Forks girls basketball team had a chance to tie the game after Neah Bay came roaring back from behind in the second half, but wasn’t able to get a shot off in the final seconds, falling 54-50.

The Red Devils hit five 3-pointers in the second half and outscored the Spartans 38-28 in the final two quarters after Forks took a 22-16 lead into the break.

“We had a chance to tie with less than 10 seconds left, but we turned it over with three seconds left,” said Forks coach David Hurn. “We had our chances, but we made too many mistakes down the end.

“The good news is these are correctable mistakes. It’s up to us to correct them,” Hurn said.

Keira Johnson and Kyra Neel each had big games again for the Spartans. Johnson scored 20 points while Neel had a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Kadie Wood had seven points.

Allie Greene hit four 3-pointers and finished with 20 points for Neah Bay. Qwaapeys Greene hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 and Koren Cummins scored 13.

The game begins a stretch of five games in eight days for the Spartans. Forks (2-0, 2-2) plays Ilwaco (2-0, 3-0) at home at 7 p.m. today.

Neah Bay is scheduled to play Forks again on Dec. 19 in Neah Bay.

East Jefferson 38, Seattle Christian 33

CHIMACUM — The East Jefferson girls basketball team got together for a pregame meal and it helped the team get off to a scorching 15-5 start against Seattle Christian on Monday night. The Rivals went on to win 38-33 for their first victory of the young season.

“They had a team dinner before the game to get their heads together and they started the game in a good place. They focused really well,” said coach Lorraine Rimson.

Rimson said after the fast start, the Rivals’ Maddy Harris and Alyssa Vandenberg got in some foul trouble. Seattle Christian was able to battle back to make it 21-15 for East Jefferson at the half.

Rimson said Addy Asbell had a great game on defense and the boards with six rebounds. She also contributed nine points though the Rivals don’t look to her for scoring. Kay Botkin led the Rivals with 10 points.

“Asbell has a wind-up key. She just keeps going and going, seemingly beyond what is humanly possible,” Rimson said.

Vandenberg led the team with eight rebounds, while Abbie Liske had six rebounds, six blocks and three assists.

Rimson also said the Rivals are now able to show off their new uniforms. The team had been mismatched Chimacum and Port Townsend jerseys since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“They really look like the real deal and they’re rising to the occasion and playing like the real deal,” she said.

East Jefferson (1-1, 1-2) will next play at Life Christian (1-1, 1-1) on Thursday.

Girls bowling

Port Angeles 7, Bremerton 0

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls bowling team improved its record to 4-4 after shutting out Bremerton 7-0 on Monday at Laurel Lanes.

The Roughriders used eight different bowlers in the varsity match to earn the team victory. Zoey Van Gordon had high honors with a single-game score of 150 and a two-game combined score of 270.

The next match will be held at North Mason on Thursday.
