PREP ROUNDUP: PA boys split against 4A teams; Forks boys and PA girls sweep at tourneys

YAKIMA — The Port Angeles basketball boys got 30 points from Kyle Benedict on Friday to beat Davis 66-58, earning a split against 4A opponents at the Wilbur-Ellis SunDome shootout.

Earlier in the tournament, the Roughriders lost to West Valley of Yakima 64-49.

With the split, the Roughriders, playing a tough nonleague schedule, went 3-1 this season against 3A and 4A schools.

Coach Kasey Ulin said that in the West Valley game, the boys were intimidated by the SunDome.

“We let the environment of the SunDome take us out of what we wanted to do. We never found a rhythm,” Ulin said.

“We responded really well against Davis.”

Ulin said Davis and West Valley were two completely different kinds of teams. He described West Valley as a methodicalm, very skilled team, whereas Davis was a pressing, man-to-man aggressive team.

The Riders had a great second half against Davis, outscoring them 39-20. Benedict scored 18 of his 30 points in the second half.

“Our defense and our offense were extremely connected. It was really, really fun to watch,” Ulin said.

Garrett Edwards had 12 and Liam Clark and Payton Schmidt each scored 10 in the Davis win.

Against West Valley, Clark led the team with 10 points, while Benedict had nine and Anton Kathol eight.

Port Angeles (2-1, 6-3) will next play at 7:15 p.m. Friday against North Mason, a game rescheduled because of the countywide power outage earlier this month. Then the Riders will have an interesting game against 1A Lynden Christian at home at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Lynden Christian is the defending 1A state champion and a team the Riders played twice during summer league action. The Lyncs (9-0 overall) are the No. 1 ranked 1A team in the state.

Forks wins Leavenworth tourney

LEAVENWORTH — The Forks Spartans came back from a 24-point deficit to force overtime, eventually beating a very good Vashon team 70-69 to win the championship of the Leavenworth Holiday Tournament.

Cort Prose scored 26 points, including 18 points in the second half and overtime. Trey Baysinger had 12, Braton Armas 11 and Seth Johnson 10.

“It was so exciting, especially coming back from where we were,” said coach Rick Gooding. “We were super excited, the kids were pumped.”

Gooding said that even when the team was down 24 to Vashon, which is a 1A school that has beaten a 4A school this year, if the Spartans could just get into a rhythm, they could pull it out.

Gooding said that Baysinger and Prose made a couple of clutch plays to pull the game out. On a missed free throw by Armas with 7 seconds left in overtime, Baysinger was able to tip the rebound out to Prose, who buried a shot for the winning margin.

Earlier in the tournament against Cascade, Forks got out to a 36-18 lead in the first half and went on to win 67-46. Johnson led the Spartans with 17 points while Armas had 11.

Forks (0-0, 7-3) opens up Evergreen 1A play on the road against Tenino (0-0, 7-2) on Wednesday.

Girls Basketball

Port Angeles sweeps

LYNDEN — The Port Angeles girls crushed a pair of opponents in sweeping two games at the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic.

The Roughrider first beat De La Salle of Oregon 66-13, then beat Tahoma 74-39.

Against De La Salle, the Riders were led by Jaida Wood with 18 and Eve Burke with 17.

“De La Salle was missing two key players. They struggled against both our zone and man-to-man defense. We had outstanding ball movement on offense and attacked inside effectively,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

Against Tahoma, Port Angeles was led by Madi Cooke with 18, Wood with 15 and Mikkiah Brady with 10.

“Our defensive pressure helped slow the pace of Tahoma’s game, they like to get up the floor quickly and get early shots up, and we frustrated them early in the game,” Poindexter said.

Port Angeles (4-0, 9-1) will next play at North Mason (1-3, 7-4) on Friday, a make-up game from the power outage earlier this month.

“[Olson] has a beautiful shot and shot got it going,” said coach David Hurn.
