PORT ANGELES — A trio of Olympic Peninsula high school boys and girls basketball seniors were picked this week to participate in state basketball all-star games Saturday.
The boys all-star games are being held by the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches’ Association. They will be held at Curtis High School.
Selected to play in the 2A game is Port Angeles’ Wyatt Dunning. Dunning,a. 6-foot-6 shooting forward, led the Roughriders in scoring this year and was a big part of the team’s sixth-place finish at the state 2A basketball tournament.
Two of Dunning’s teammates will be former opponents from North Kitsap. The Riders had three tough games against the Vikings this season, winning one of them. Jonny Olmstead and Jonas LaTour from North Kitsap will be part of Dunning’s team. Another familiar opponent for Dunning is John John Barbee of Franklin Pierce. Port Angeles played Franklin Pierce twice in the postseason, winning both games. Barbee was also selected to be part of the 2A team.
The 2A boys will play the 1A state boys team beginning at 2 p.m.
For the girls, Eve Burke of Port Angeles was named to the 2A team by the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches’ Association. Burke led the Riders girls’ team in scoring at more than 20 points a game.
Ocean Aguirre of Neah Bay, the only senior on a squad that finished second in the state, was named to the girls 1B team. Aguirre will also have some familiar teammates. Mount Vernon Christian beat Neah Bay in the state title game and the Tri-District tournament championship, and MVC has two girls on the all-state team — Kylee Russell and Emma Droog.
Another familiar opponent, Lola Baerlocher of Colton, is on the all-state team. Neah Bay upset Colton in the 1B state semifinals.
The game between the 1A girls and 2A girls will be played at 4 p.m. at Kings High School. The girls 1B vs. 2B game will be played at 2 p.m.
