PREP ROUNDUP: Port Angeles girls grind out a basketball win over North Mason

Rider bowlers fare well at league tournament

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles got the better of a rock fight with North Mason, bumping the Bulldogs 37-26 in an Olympic League girls basketball contest Thursday in the Rider Gym.

The Roughriders edged North Mason in field-goal percentage 29 to 20 on the night.

“It was a low-possession game, as both teams employed zone defenses that slowed offensive tempo,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “We had trouble scoring inside against North Mason’s physicality in their 2-3 zone, and our outside shots didn’t fall [6 of 24] with the exception of four three-pointers in the third quarter, our highest-scoring quarter.”

Paige Mason was the only Rider to reach double figures in scoring with 10 points. She also led the team with five steals.

Izzy Felton had nine points for Port Angeles along with four assists.

“Paige Mason and Izzy Felton were our only consistent offensive scorers,” Poindexter said.

“Our trouble offensively tended to be forced passes and drives that didn’t cause the North Mason zone to move enough so that we could create and attack gaps. Our ball movement improved in the second half, allowing us to score 24 points as opposed to our 15 first-half points.”

North Mason’s Adrianne Tupolo, a returning first-team all-league junior, had 22 of the Bulldogs’ 26 points.

“We rebounded well at the defensive end, holding North Mason to just seven offensive rebounds.

Besides Paige and Izzy’s offensive production, Lexie Smith had her usual across-the-board contributions with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.”

Port Angeles (7-1, 9-6) visits Olympic on Tuesday.

Boys Basketball Raymond 56, Forks 47

RAYMOND — The Spartans spotted the Seagulls an 11-0 lead to open the game on Raymond’s senior night.

“Lots of people in the stands, lots of energy in the gym,” coach Keith Weekes said. “We came out too slow and let them use the energy to build momentum which is all it took to determine the game. We were down 11-0 to start and that was too much to overcome. We went on a 11-0 run ourselves but we were always just playing catch up.

“While we were slow and seemed to be on our heels a bit we had spurts where we looked great, but in a game in that kind of atmosphere it takes more then a few spurts and they ended up have more of them then we did.”

Brody Lausche led Forks with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Aidan Salazar added 12 and Kyle Lohrengel had nine for the Spartans.

“Brody did a great job taking advantage of every time he touched the ball,” Weekes said. “Titus Rowley was a fighter, always going after rebounds and loose balls, Landen Olson always battles well on the defense rebounds. Kyle did good trying to control our offense and get the ball to open guys.

“Unfortunately with the loss we are most likely out of the running for our league championship goal, but we are going to continue to fight and use all of our potential to finish our season strong and try to do something special in the post season.”

Forks (5-3, 9-6) visits North Beach tonight.
