PREP ROUNDUP: Port Angeles softball girls belt five homers, romp in doubleheader

ANACORTES — The Port Angeles girls softball team, returning to action after a 15-1 abbreviated season in 2021, started off with two big wins on the road this weekend, 8-1 over Anacortes and 19-2 over Sehome.

Against Anacortes, “Port Angeles faced great pitching while striking out 16 times but managed to score eight runs on eight hits with 12 stolen bases,” said coach Randy Steinman. “Our pitchers were hitting their spots while striking out 10 and only giving up two hits.”

Cheyenne Zimmer started the game, going three innings, striking out five while giving up two hits and two walks. Teagan Clark got the victory, going the final four innings, allowing no hits while striking out five and giving up one walk.

Lily Halberg hit a solo home run, while Zoe Smithson had a triple and a single, driving in two runs. Natalie Robinson with 3-for-4 at the plate and Emi Halberg scored two runs.

The power Roughriders’ offense got going in Game 2 against Sehome.

“Port Angeles pounded out 17 hits, had four home runs and our pitchers kept the Sehome hitters at bay,” Steinman said. “Overall, a great day for the Rider softball team.”

Belting home runs for the Roughriders were Smithson, Lily Halberg, Peyton Rudd and Abby Kimball. Rudd added a pair of doubles.

Smithson had five RBIs in the game, while Rudd had four and Lily Halberg two. Lily Halberg also scored three runs while Emi Halberg scored two.

Robinson was again 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Ava-Anne Sheahan went 2-for-2, while Taylor Worthington went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

From the pitching rubber, Teagan started, going two innings and allowing three hits and two walks while striking out three. Zimmer got the win, going the final two innings, giving up four hits and striking out two.

Boys soccer

Kingston 3, Port Angeles 2 (OT)

KINGSTON — The Port Angeles boys soccer team had a heartbreaking loss with a penalty called in the final seconds, allowing Kingston to tie the game 2-2 on a penalty kick.

The Buccaneers went on to win with a goal in the sudden-death overtime.

“It was a really tough way to lose for Port Angeles, who were 30 seconds away from a three-point win and ended up with no points in the loss,” said coach Chris Saari.

“We made a lot of improvements from the last time we played Kingston. We still have a lot of room to grow. All we can control is how hard we play,” Josiah Long said.

Kingston scored first with a goal in the 14th minute. The Riders came back to tie in the 36th minute on a right-footed curling shot by Dayton Williams with an assist to Keane McClain. Saari called it a “brilliant, long-range shot” by Williams.

It appeared the Riders were going to win when Xander Maestas scored a goal in the 75th minute. The assist went to Williams on a cross from the left side. Maestas got in behind the defense, collected Williams’ pass and scored.

The Buccaneers were awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball. Saari called it a questionable call.

Kingston finished with 15 shots to Port Angeles’ seven. Riders’ keeper Marcus Hogan had 10 saves.

Saari named Maestas his offensive player of the match and Hogan his defensive player of the match. He named Williams, Damon Gunderson and McClain his transition players of the match.

Port Angeles (0-2-0, 1 point, 1-2-0) next plays at home at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday against North Mason (0-2-0).
