PREP ROUNDUP: Roughriders baseball wins fifth in a row

LYNDEN — The Port Angeles baseball team got a home run and a solid outing on the mound from Brody Merritt in beating Lynden 10-4 for the Riders’ fifth win in a row.

Merritt hit a two-run home run in the first inning to help stake himself to a 4-0 lead after a big Riders’ start. He pitched the first three innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking two.

Joel Wood and Gavin Guerrero also had big days. Wood went 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple, driving in three runs. He also walked and got on base after getting hit by a pitch. Guerrero went 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

Ethan Flodstrom went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, a run scored, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. He also pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing no hits and walking two.

Daniel Basden, Tanner Lunt and Milo Whitman each scored two runs.

Seth Scofield pitched three innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out two.

The Roughriders (4-0, 7-3) now get a 10-day break for spring break. They return to the diamond at 4:15 p.m. April 10 for a league game at home against Olympic.

Chimacum swept

TENINO — The Chimacum baseball squad got into two completely different games — one a wild error-fest and the other one a tight pitchers’ duel — against Tenino, coming up short by one run in both games.

The Cowboys lost to the Beavers in the doubleheader 2-1 and 8-7. Five out of the Cowboys’ seven losses this year have been by one run.

In Game One, the Cowboys’ Cole Dotson pitched an outstanding complete game, going six innings, and giving up just four hits, two walks and one earned run in the loss.

The Cowboys could only manage seven singles and no walks against Tenino’s Logan Brewer and were only able to break through for one run in the third, scored by Issac Purser, who had gotten on base on an error.

The 8-7 loss was a much different game as the two teams combined for 12 errors over eight innings. Tenino made seven errors, allowing seven Chimacum runs on only four hits. The Beavers won in the bottom of the eighth on a walk and a pair of bunts, bringing home the winning run.

Cody Clark went 2 for 4 with a double for the Cowboys. Henry Brebberman was 1 for 4 with a run and two RBIs, while Purser had a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Carson McConnell was 1 for 4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Chimacum (0-1, 4-7) gets a 10-day break for the spring and is scheduled to play again at Port Townsend at 4:15 p.m. April 10.

Boys soccer

Port Townsend 2, Bremerton 2

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend soccer squad fought off illness, coming from behind to battle Bremerton to a 2-2 draw.

“Bremerton came out strong to start the match, scoring on a quick counterattack after 10 minutes. We were playing with a makeshift defense as we were missing players through illness so we were shaky at the back, misplacing a lot of passes in midfield and not being efficient with the chances we had in front of goal,” said coach Robert Cantley.

A minute before halftime, Bremerton added a second goal to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

“The second half was a different story as our defense tightened up under the leadership of senior Owen Scanlon, while the midfield trio of Zach Dempsey, Ben Mattern and Silas Dewyse gained control of the midfield through possession of the ball and aggressive pressing,” Cantley said.

The Redhawks got off 13 second-half shots, but were unable to get on the scoreboard until the 69th minute. Dewyse was fouled in the box and Mattern scored the ensuing penalty kick.

The Redhawks put on all the pressure for the rest of the match according to Cantley, and their hard work finally paid off with a free kick from 20 yards out in the waning minutes. Mattern faked a shot, passed the ball to Trillium Dewyse. The Bremerton keeper lost control of his save on the shot, and Silas DeWyse was able to tap the ball in.

“Overall an impressive performance from two goals down, a spirited display to get back into the game and control it,” said Cantley.

Port Townsend keeper Nico Winegar made seven saves, six of them in the first half.

The Redhawks (1-1, 2-2-1) next play on the road at Klahowya (3-0, 5-1-2) on April 9.

Girls Softball

Sequim 8, Bremerton 0

SEQUIM — The Wolves’ Kylynn Stringer gave up only three hits through five innings as the Sequim softball team beat Bremerton 8-0.

Stringer picked up the win. LeeAnn Raney pitched the final two innings in relief, striking out four of the six batters she faced.

Seven Sequim batters scattered eight hits throughout the game. The Wolves also committed just one error in the game.

The Wolves (2-1, 4-2) are off until April 10. They next play at Kingston.
