SEQUIM — The Sequim girls basketball team went up by 20 points in the first quarter and remained perfect with a 73-51 win over Class 3A Bainbridge.

The Wolves broke out to a 28-8 lead after the first eight minutes. They scored at least 15 points in every quarter.

“The girls played very well during the first quarter,” coach Joclin Julmist said. “We did a good job playing defense, which created a few turnovers, and we got a few easy baskets. The girls did a great job passing the ball and looking for each other.”

The Wolves had six girls who scored eight or more points.

Jelissa Julmist led the Wolves with 18 points and 20 rebounds. Hannah Bates ran the offense and chipped in 14 points and six assists, while Hannah Wagner played great on the defensive end, coach Julmist said.

Wagner finished with 11 points and three steals.

Jolene Vaara had 10 points and seven rebounds, including five offensive rebounds, while Addie Smith came off the bench for nine points. Lauryn Stephens added eight points.

Sequim (3-0, 1-0) next plays at Bremerton (0-1, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders pressed and zoned the Knights into 40 turnovers and moved the ball well offensively to win their Olympic League opener Tuesday.

“Our full-court press bothered Bremerton early in the game, but we also got quite a few turnovers off our 2-3 zone defense,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “Our offensive ball movement against Bremerton’s zone was effective, as was our offensive rebounding effort [18 offensive boards].”

Eve Burke posted a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and four steals

“Eve Burke led us once again with 14 points, six of which came from the free-throw line on 6 of 7 shooting. In three games so far, Eve is 21-for-26 from the free-throw line (76-percent),” Poindexter said.

“We were able to get all of our more inexperienced players plenty of time on the floor. Paige Mason responded well with her nine rebounds, and Piper Williams had 10 points on a 4-for-6 shooting night from the field.”

OCEAN SHORES — The Spartans won their Pacific 2B League opener as Keira Johnson hit for 22 points and Kadie Wood added 17.

Forks had a big lead after one quarter, but it wasn’t a result of a defensive clampdown.

“Honestly, [North Beach] just missed some shots,” Spartans coach David Hurn said. “We played pretty good offensively, but I was disappointed in our defensive effort. I don’t want to be a downer about the game, but we didn’t do what we need to do as far as getting into our rotations. Credit North Beach, they are improved, but we have to bring more energy.”

Forks (1-0, 2-1) hosts South Beach at home today.

Quilcene 58, Crescent 56

JOYCE — Just a few days removed from playing in the state 1B football championship, the Rangers fended off a game Loggers team 58-56.

Loggers coach Chris Ferrier called it “a track meet, a frantic up-and-down affair.”

“We started out really slow and had problems with their size and length. Rebounding was an issue in the first half and there really was not a lot to be happy about for us,” Ferrier said.

“We went in at halftime and the guys made the choice to get back to playing with our principles and we really made a good run at it. Our defense and rebounding vastly improved in the second half.”

Quilcene got up 38-21 at the half, but Crescent responded with a 24-point third quarter to make it a close game at the end.

“It was a good learning experience for our guys that we have to play a full 32 minutes, and not wait around to start playing until we are down 17 points,” Ferrier said.

Isaiah Reimann led the Rangers with 24 points while Nathan Kieffer had 10 and James Miller nine.

Crescent was led by 17 points from Weston Hart and 15 each from Brayden Emery and Hayden Ferrel.
