PREP ROUNDUP: Sequim girls; PA boys and girls win cross country duals

SEQUIM — Christening a new cross country course at the Dungeness Recreation Area outside of Sequim, the Port Angeles boys and girls won their dual, while the Sequim girls also won.

“Kudos to the Sequim coaches on the beautiful new course, and thanks to the Clallam County Parks for allowing the event to take place,” said Port Angeles coach Rodger Johnson.

The Sequim girls, led by Riley Pyeatt, nipped a powerful Klahowya team 27-28 (lower scores are better in cross country).

Pyeatt won her race by more than two minutes with a time of 19 minutes, 54.5 seconds. Sequim’s Anastasia Updike came in fourth with a time of 23:15.2, and teammate Jessica German came in fifth with a time of 23:15.6.

The Wolves’ Aidyn Shingleton finished seventh (24:50.6) and teammate Abby Benjamin came in 10th (30:53.3).

The Port Angeles girls beat Kingston 21-34. They were led by Lauren Larson, who had the best girls time on the day at 19:20.3. She won by a whopping 4 minutes, 25 seconds. Coming in second was Kathryn Guttormsen (23:45.7). The Roughriders’ Jenna McGoff was fifth (24:46.7), Gracie Townsend sixth (25:30.7) and Emma Weaver seventh (25:36.9).

East Jefferson’s Camryn Hines won her race, a dual with Olympic (Olympic did not have enough runners for a team score). Hines had a time of 22:14.6. She just beat her teammate Aliyah Yearian, who finished second with a time of 22:18.5.

East Jefferson’s Lia Poore was fourth (25:59.2), Sylvia Butterfield fifth (26:03.9) and Gina Brown sixth (29:28.7).

The Roughrider boys beat Kingston 20-38, picking up six out of the top eight spots.

“The boys were really happy with their race today. They know Kingston has a good team, and gave 100 percent out there on the course,” Johnson said of the Riders.

Jack Gladfelter finished second with a time of 17:26.3, Joshua Gavin was third (18:03.3), Langdon Larson fourth (18:29.6), Naaman McGuffey fifth (18:34.4), Maxwell Baeder sixth (18:38.7) and Lucas Gavin eighth (18:56.0).

Klahowya was able to beat the Sequim boys 20-39. Colby Ellefson led the Sequim boys, finishing third with a time of 17:49.8 and Eli Gish was fifth with a time of 18:58.0.

The Wolves’ Henry Hughes was eighth with a time of 20:03.8.

The Olympic boys’ team nipped East Jefferson 27-32, though East Jefferson got the top two individual finishes. East Jefferson’s Max Allworth-Miles won the race with a time of 18:27.4, while teammate Sebastian Manza was second at 18:57.7.

East Jefferson’s Braley Phillips was sixth (24:51.9), Ocean Smith was 11th (26:57.5) and Indigo Gould 12th (27:41.6).

Port Angeles swimming

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles freshman Yau Fu and senior captain Adriana McClain provided the most excitement in the Roughriders’ latest time trial, battling it out in the 200-yard freestyle, achieving district-qualifying times and personal bests.

Fu had the better time at 2 minutes, 17.32 seconds, barely nipping McClain, who posted a time of 2:17.47.

“This season with COVID capacity restrictions we have not been able to swim against other teams, so when two teammates battle it out to the end, it’s a fun event to watch. They were neck and neck the entire race and the whole team elevated the noise to cheer them on. It’s great to see the girls create competition within our team environment,” said coach Sally Cole.

The times were just two of numerous personal bests on the day.

Fu also swam a personal best in her 500 free and qualified for districts (6:06.99), improving her time by 10 seconds from only two weeks ago.

Senior captain Kiara Schmitt qualified for districts in her 50 freestyle with a time of 0:27.39 and in her 500 freestyle with a time of 6:04.08. Freshman Harper McGuire qualified for districts and swam her personal-best times in the 50 freestyle (0:26.91) and 100 freestyle (0:58.94)

Emilee Reid qualified for districts in her 500 freestyle with a time of 6:37.13. Rachel Cooper qualified for districts in her 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:22.29.

In diving, all varsity divers qualified for districts. Anne Edwards led the way with a cumulative score of 324.17. Aubrie Scott had a score of 306.45, Maizie Tucker was third at 270.7 and Grace Possinger fourth at 228.15.
