PREP ROUNDUP: Sequim girls stingy in holding Klahowya to eight points

SEQUIM — Sequim limited Klahowya defensively in a 68-8 Olympic League girls basketball victory, the first time the Wolves have held a team to single-digit scoring in at least 20 seasons.

Sequim nearly pulled off the accomplishment during the 2004-05 season, beating Klahowya 46-10 during coach Linsay Rapelje’s first stint as head coach, according to records kept by the Sequim Gazette.

“It was a pretty physical game and Klahowya didn’t give up, so the score seemed closer than it was,” Rapelje said of Tuesday night’s game.

“Jayla Julmist, who averages a double-double, had another double-double with 16 points and 12 boards, adding four assists and five steals as well.”

Kalli Wiker hit for 13 points with three assists and two steals.

Jelissa Julmist hauled down eight rebounds, scored six points and had two assists and a steal.

Freshman Jolene Vaara was active with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and five points.

Melissa Porter scored 11 with four boards, four assists and three steals.

Rapelje said senior Amanda Weller was the team’s player of the game.

“[She] came off the bench playing hard for us with six points and four rebounds,” Rapelje said. “It was another total team effort.”

Sequim (6-1) hosts Bremerton (2-4) tonight.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders forced multiple turnovers early to build a commanding 29-2 lead in an Olympic League win over the Cougars.

“We got off to a great start in our 1-3-1 zone,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “Although we played it for only five minutes in the game, it, along with our 2-3 zone, caused 14 Central Kitsap turnovers in the first quarter.”

Eve Burke led Port Angeles with 18 points and also added four steals.

“Overall, we had an off-shooting night [38 percent], but Eve Burke was her usual efficient self with an 8 of 13 shooting night [62 percent],” Poindexter said.

“Both our 1-3-1 and 2-3 zones were outstanding in terms of limiting Central Kitsap’s options offensively. Our man-to-man defense in the second half was less effective, but we will work to improve in it in our future games.”

Millie Long added 14 points, six steals, five assists and five rebounds.

Jaida Wood scored 10 points with five rebounds and three assists.

Port Angeles (8-0) hosts Kingston (4-2) on Friday.

NEAH BAY — Oceanna Aguirre led five Red Devils in double figures with 19 points in a win over the Loggers.

Aguirre added three steals, three assists, five rebounds and hit all five of her free-throw shots in the game.

Courtney Swan (12), Laila Greene (11), Ryana Moss (11) and Allie Greene (10) all hit double figures for unbeaten Neah Bay (6-0).

The Red Devils visit Chief Kitsap on Friday.

NEAH BAY — Julian Carrick and Jaxson Halttunen had big scoring nights as the Red Devils (5-0) remained unbeaten.

Carrick poured in a game-high 25 points to go with five steals, four rebounds and three assists.

Halttunen added 20 points, four assists and a pair of steals in the win.

Brendan Bergstrom led the Loggers with 16 points.
