PORT ANGELES — Riding solid scores from their big three of Dominic Riccobene, Ben Sweet and Pryce Glasser, the Sequim boys golf team edged a Port Angeles squad that gave the Wolves a run for their money.
Sequim won 169 to 182 with eight golfers on the two teams combined shooting rounds under 50 at Peninsula Golf Course.
Sequim’s Riccobene was the medalist with a 39, while Sweet was right behind at 40. Glasser shot a solid 43 and Cole Smithson a 47.
The Roughriders were led by Edun Bailey and Austin Worthington, both of whom shot 44. Nate Anderson was one shot behind at 45 and Phoenix Flores shot a 49 to round out the scoring.
Port Angeles’ Reid Schmidt and Isaac Shamp each shot 55, while Sequim’s Zack Thompson shot a 56 and Lars Wiker a 59.
Sequim coach Sean O’Mera said the golfers battled cold all day with the team experiencing some snow flurries on the way to the match.
“Dom scored well today, getting the most out of a round that saw him hit some great shots, but also some not so great shots,”O’Mera said. “On the first hole, he missed the green, but hit a recovery chip shot to within a millimeter. He also got up and down from off the green three other times during his round.
“Right behind Dom today was Ben Sweet. Ben fired a 4-over par 40, that included a birdie on the fifth hole. It was admittedly not Ben’s best day, but he hung around and posted a decent score,” O’Mera said.
Sequim (6-0) next hosts Bainbridge at the Cedars at Dungeness at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Boys Soccer
Forks 1, Montesano 0
FORKS — The Forks boys soccer team won a crucial Pacific League match against Montesano, getting a late goal from Ethan Bellows to win 1-0.
“That a good match. We played well,” said coach Ismael Ramos. Ramos said Forks’ style is to usually play tough defense and then counter-strike, but in this match, the Spartans were able to possess the ball 60 percent of the time against 1A Montesano (Forks plays soccer in a combined 1A/2B league).
The game was 0-0 and headed for overtime when Bellows scored with just three minutes left. He collected a pass from Hector Garcia-Dominguez, who got the assist, and powered a shot to the corner of the net.
“He hit it right off the post. I think the keeper might have gotten a hand on it,” Ramos said.
Juan Terrones got the shutout in goal, and Ramos said Arturo Dominguez-Gomez played an outstanding game as well in the midfield.
“Arturo’s touches on the ball were great. He controlled the ball and the midfield well,” he said.
With the win, the Spartans (5-2-0, 6-3-0) moved into a tie for second place in the Pacific League, though Montesano has an edge in goal differential. Forks next hosts Tenino (4-3, 5-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Annie Wright 1, East Jefferson 0
TACOMA — Playing shorthanded and battling horrendous weather, the East Jefferson boys soccer team couldn’t manage to score in a 1-0 Nisqually League loss to Annie Wright on Saturday.
“It wasn’t really a good game for us. The weather was really nasty. There was sideways rain and hail,” said coach Robert Cantley.
The Rivals only had 10 players available so they were forced to bring five kids up from the junior varsity team. Annie Wright scored its lone goal early in the match on a free kick.
“We didn’t defend it well. It was a miscommunication between our keeper and our defenders. No one went to the ball,” Cantley said.
Cantley said Zephyr Bell played well in the loss. He is normally a JV player who came up to play defense in the varsity match. “He was incredible and fearless,” Cantley said.
He also said East Jefferson keeper Haven McMillen played well. “He pulled out a lot of saves. We don’t call him ‘Savin Haven’ for nothing,” Cantley said.
East Jefferson (3-4-1, 3-5-1) next plays Thursday at Bellevue Christian (4-0-2, 4-2-2).
