BELFAIR — Juniors Taryn Johnson and Jenny Gomez led the way with hat tricks as the Sequim girls soccer team opened the season in fine form with a 12-0 win over North Mason.
“Our girls played strong and got stronger in the second half,” coach Ken Garling said. “I was proud of how we maintained possession in North Mason’s half of the field. We were getting second and third shot opportunities on a pretty regular basis.”
Gomez opened the scoring with a left-footed strike in the fourth minute and also added goals in the 43rd and 79th minutes.
Johnson went on a scoring spree after halftime, scoring three goals in less than 10 minutes (47th, 52nd and 56th). She also assisted on two goals, Eve Breithaupt’s one-timer from long distance in the 63rd and Teagen Moore’s goal in the 70th minute.
“Eve’s goal was just a beautiful strike from about 30 yards out,” Garling said. “Taryn let it off to her and she one-timed struck it perfectly.”
Sophomore Libby Turella came up from her defender position to score twice in the 24th and 54th minutes and add an assist.
Freshman Raimey Brewer added two goals and an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kalli Grove earned the shutout.
“Once we adjusted to their tactic of sending the long ball to their striker, [defenders] Kaia [Lesstage] and Ivy Barrett just shut them down.”
Sequim (1-0-0) visits rival Port Angeles (1-0-0) tonight at Wally Sigmar Field at 6:45 p.m.
Port Angeles 6, Kingston 0
KINGSTON — Experience bolstered by some youthful skill lifted the Roughriders in the first match under new head coach Daniel Horton.
Freshman Kendryn DeScala had two goals up top for Port Angeles, while junior Paige Mason also notched two goals after making a move to the midfield.
“I think I turned some heads when I brought this idea up, but Paige is so strong with the ball and skilled in possession that we need to have her playing in the midfield,” Horton said.
Senior Anna Petty, last season’s Peninsula Daily News All-Peninsula Girls Soccer MVP, also scored a goal and added two assists.
Petty played more as an attacking midfielder Tuesday night, instead of the holding midfielder position she shined at last season.
Senior Piper Williams also scored a goal. Izzy Felton notched a pair of assists and Julia Baeder also assisted on a goal.
“Our whole defense was solid — we only allowed one shot,” Horton said.
He praised goalkeeper Saylah Commerton for communicating with her defenders.
“We were well into the game before Kingston crossed midfield,” Horton said. “She controlled and commanded that defense.
Senior Lilly Sanders also drew praise for her leadership with freshman defenders Becca Manson and Kennedy Rognlien.
“Lilly has been a leader, helping us out defensively and being a role model for these freshmen,” Horton said.
Port Angeles (1-0-0) hosts Sequim tonight at 6:45 p.m. at Wally Sigmar Field.

PORT TOWNSEND — Kaylin Pray scored all four goals for the Rivals off of three Iris Mattern assists, but the team is still learning how to close out opponents after two early ties.
“We played them three times last year and definitely closed the gap on them and felt like we could have won the game,” coach Robert Cantley said.
“We were able to play a good counterattack game with Kaylin’s speed,” he said.
Mattern found Pray for the first score in the 15th minute and the duo connected again for a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the second half.
But quick Pirates’ goals on a penalty kick and a deflected score tied the game at 2-all.
The Rivals bounced back for a 4-2 advantage as Mattern found Pray for the third time, and Pray pounced on a defensive throw-in by the Pirates.
“Vashon started throwing long balls forward and it paid off twice in a couple of minutes,” Cantley said. “It was really a rollercoaster of a game.”
Cantley said forward Ava Shiflett was involved and making a positive impact in the game.
He also was happy to have senior midfielder Leah Harrison back out on the field.
“She missed all of last year with a broken ankle,” Cantley said.
“And our goalkeeper Taylar Davis is a freshman, which can be a pretty daunting task, but she’s mature and handled the game well.”

Sequim 3, North Mason 1

“We missed a whole bunch of serves in that first game. I think we were a little bit nervous at the beginning,” said coach Jennie Webber-Heilman.
The Wolves recovered as Angel Wagner had an 11-point run serving.
“It didn’t bother them that they lost the first game which was nice. The next game, we lost just one serve,” Webber-Heilman said.
Wagner ended up serving 24-for-26 with six aces and three kills. Kendall Hastings had six kills and three stuff bocks, while Sammie Bacon served 14-for-15 with three kills.
