PREP ROUNDUP: Sequim, Port Angeles tennis squads win … and volleyball results

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys tennis team picked up an Olympic League win with a convincing 6-1 win over the Olympic Trojans.

The doubles’ teams were again a strength for the Roughriders as all four Port Angeles’ pairings won. Two out of three singles players also earned victories.

“We’ve been talking about being more consistent and I thought that started to show today,” said coach Brian Gundersen.

No. 1 singles player Hayden Woods bounced back from a slow start, losing his first set 7-5. He came back to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-1. Daniel Basden won his singles match 7-5, 6-1.

The win keeps the Riders in the hunt at 3-2 in league.

Port Angeles (3-2, 3-2) played Bremerton (4-1, 4-1) at home Tuesday in another crucial meet. They play at North Mason at 4 p.m. today.

Sequim 7, North Mason 0

SEQUIM — Sequim blanked North Mason 7-0 as every Wolves’ singles and doubles’ player won.

It wasn’t even particularly close as North Mason wasn’t able to manage winning a single set. Two matches were also awarded to Sequim via forfeit. Raymond Lam and Sam Frymyer won as singles, while the doubles teams of Blake Wiker/Thomas Hughes, Liam Payne/Damon Little and Dustin Koch/Henry Hughes all won their matches.

The win gives Sequim a 4-1 record in the Olympic League, in second place behind North Kitsap.

The Wolves play the first-place Vikings (4-0) at Poulsbo at 4 p.m. today.

Volleyball

Sequim 3, Klahowya 1

SILVERDALE — The Wolves remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 (25-5, 18-25, 25-13, 25-18) nonleague win over Klahowya.

Brittney Gale served 18 for 19 — including 14 serves in a row at one point — with 18 assists, while fellow setter Kali Wiker served 17 for 18 with 24 assists.

Tayler Breckenridge had her usual stat-heavy match with 23 kills, 19 digs and 20 for 20 serving with three aces.

Jayla Julmist served eight for eight with nine kills and two stuff blocks.

Bobbi Sparks, playing a stint at libero, served 12 for 13 with 19 digs. Isabelle Dennis also served 11 for 11 with 20 digs.

Sequim played a crucial league match Tuesday after press deadline against powerhouse North Kitsap (2-0, 3-0), which is also undefeated in league.

The Wolves (3-0, 5-0) get a full week off after the Vikings match. They next play next Tuesday at home against North Mason (2-1, 2-1).

Crescent 3, Oakville 0

JOYCE — The Loggers swept the Acorns 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-9) for their first win of the season.

“A very young team came together for Crescent’s 1B win against Oakville,” coach Nora Wilson said of Thursday’s match. “Senior Jasmine O’Neel and juniors Casey Hale and Taneisha Kazlauskas led a team of two freshmen and seven eighth graders for the win. Jocy Kazlauskas, Hale and O’Neel led in serving for a team-combined serving percentage of 90.4 percent.

“It was a fun night, setting a good momentum going forward,” Wilson said.

The Loggers (1-1) hosted Mary M. Knight late Tuesday after press deadline and will visit Oakville on Thursday.

Quilcene splits two

QUILCENE — The Rangers are off to a 1-1 start in league play after beating Rainier Christian 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 26-24) on Sept. 11. They lost to Christian Faith in a match that was closer than the 3-0 score would indicate (20-25, 22-25, 22-25) on Sept. 12.

The Rangers (1-1, 3-1) played Sea-Tac 1B league leader Puget Sound Adventist (2-0, 2-0) Tuesday after press deadline. Quilcene next plays Concordia Christian Academy in Tacoma at 6 p.m. Thursday.
