SILVERDALE — A red-hot Sequim softball team sent notice through the Olympic 2A League this weekend that they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with, crushing both Olympic and Klahowya in a doubleheader Saturday.
The Wolves beat Klahowya 15-2 and Olympic 11-1, hitting six home runs in the Olympic game. The Wolves pushed their record to 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 45-6 so far this season.
Lily Fili had three home runs in the two games. Kiana Robideau had a home run against Klahowya, while Laney Vig, Kailyn Lopez, Katelyn Glass and Mia Pozernick had home runs against Olympic.
Vig pitched a one-hitter against Olympic, going the entire game. She struck out seven and walked two.
In the Klahowya game, Taylee Rome picked up the win on the mound, going four innings and giving up just one hit and no runs.
Hannah Bates went 3-for-3 against Klahowya, while Fili and Robideau each had two hits. Christy Grubb also had two hits, a double, two runs and two RBIs against Klahowya.
Against Olympic, Grubb went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Lopez had two hits in this game.
“They’re playing pretty well on both sides of the ball. They’re just playing well as a team,” said coach Mike McFarlen. “They get along really well and have a good relationship with each other.”
Sequim will next play, weather permitting, at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, hosting rival Port Angeles (2-0).
“Port Angeles will be a test,” McFarlen said.

Port Angeles, East Jefferson at Klahowya
SILVERDALE — The Port Angeles girls’ 4X400 relay team dominated at a four-team meet Saturday at Klahowya.
The Roughriders’ Lauren Larson also won the 1,600-meter run by a whopping 35 seconds, and her Roughriders teammate Xander Maestas won the boys 200-meter dash in a time of 25.48 seconds.
Larson took first in the 1,600 with a time of 5 minutes, 22.15 seconds, as Camryn Hines of East Jefferson finished second at 5:57.79 and her teammate Aliyah Yearian came in third at 5:58.25. Hines also finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:44.95.
The Riders’ 4×400 team of Kennedy Bruch, Lilly Sanders, Emma Weaver and Larson finished first with a time of 4:51.11, more than 30 seconds ahead of second-place Klahowya.
East Jefferson’s Aurin Asbell won two events at the same meet — the girls’ high jump (4 feet, 8 inches) and the girls’ triple jump (28-7¼).
Other Olympic Peninsula winners include:
Boys’ shot put — Daniel Cable, Port Angeles, 37 feet, 10 inches; boys discus — Gage Berry, East Jefferson, 92-0; boys’ triple jump — Tanner Carstensen, EJ, 36-10¾; and girls’ javelin — Camille Stensgard, PA, 105-6.
Cable also had an incredibly close finish in the 100-meter dash, coming in second with a time of 12.21, getting nipped by .02 of a second by Olympic runner Omaurion Allison Jackson.
Port Angeles’ Naaman McGuffey was second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.81. The Riders’ Max Baeder was second in the 3,200 meters (10:45.38) and Langdon Larson was right behind in third in the 3,200 at 10:46.09.
East Jefferson’s Tusker Behrenfeld was second in the discus with a distance of 88-9 and second in the javelin (136-3). His teammate Devin Harris was second in the high jump (5-0).
East Jefferson’s Fiona Fraser was second in the girls’ 3,200 meters (13:03.58) and the Riders’ Bruch was second in the discus (82-1).
Port Angeles’ Jayde Gedelman was second in the girls’ javelin (92-2) and the Port Angeles girls’ 4×100 team (Gracie Kennedy, Octavia Smith, Maya Gentry, Gedelman) was second with a time of 1:02.34.
The Port Angeles boys finished third as a team with 28 points, while the Port Angeles girls were also third with 29 points. East Jefferson boys were fourth with 25 points and the East Jefferson girls were fourth with 24. Klahowya won both the boys’ (46 points) and girls’ (61 points) team events.
Sequim at North Kitsap
POULSBO — Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt is normally an elite distance runner who has placed in the Top 10 at state track and state cross country meets.
But she also has the rare ability to be a top sprinter. Saturday, at a four-team meet at North Kitsap, she concentrated on the sprints and put up some impressive times for the Wolves. Pyeatt won the 400-meter run with a time of 59.32 seconds, and finished second in the 100 meters (13.55) and a solid second in the 200 meters (27.13), two full seconds ahead of third place.
Pyeatt then ran the anchor in the 4X400, helping the Sequim girls take first place. The team of Taryn Johnson, Anastasia Updike, Maci Cogburn and Pyeatt won with a time of 4:21.67. Updike also won the 3,200 meters (13:54.60), while Johnson was second in the 100 hurdles (20.46).
The Wolves’ Jolene Vaara took first in the girls’ high jump with an impressive height of 5-2. Vaara’s jump was only 2 inches off of the 2019 state championship height.
It was a sweep in the 400 meters, as the Wolves’ Henry Hughes won the boys’ race in a time of 54.87
Sequim’s Adrian Brown was first in the 110 hurdles in a time of 18.20. Mirek Skov won the boys’ pole vault with a height of 8-0.
Logan Laxson was second in both the 100 meters (12.31) and the 200 meters (24.65).
