PORT ANGELES — The Sequim volleyball girls took care of business against Port Angeles, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-21) to maintain a tight hold on second place in the Olympic League 2A Division.
For the Riders, Aeverie Politika served 11 for 11 with even kills. Nacia Bohman served 8 for 8 with three aces and Emi Halberg served 5 for 5 with four kills and five digs. Kylie Rentas served 8 for 8, while Emma Olson has six digs and Kennedy Bruch seven digs.
“[Port Angeles] served consistently tonight without any errors which has been a focus for them — mental toughness — control what we can control,” said Riders coach Christine Grunch-Halberg. “Their energy was really good at times which showed in the runs to bridge the gaps. We improved tonight on some things that we have been working on like blocking, defense and back row attacking.”
The Wolves usually split setting duties between Kalli Wiker and Brittney Gale, but Gale was out of town. Wiker had the sole setting duties and she responded with 22 assists and eight digs, while also serving 27 for 27 with four aces. Coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said Wiker had two separate runs of seven straight points serving.
Isabelle Dennis served 9 for 9 with 25 digs and Tayler Breckenridge had 12 kills and 26 digs.
Jayla Julmist had seven stuff blocks and 10 kills.
“Kalli did a great job of spreading it out,” Webber-Heilman said. “Jayla was hitting last night. She’s getting more confident with her hitting.”
Port Angeles (0-7, 0-8) plays at Kingston (4-3, 5-4) at 6:15 p.m. today. Sequim (6-1, 8-1), just one game behind first-place North Kitsap (and two games ahead of third-place Kingston and North Mason), hosts Bremerton (2-5, 3-5) at 6:15 p.m. today.
Forks 3, Hoquiam 1
HOQUIAM — The Spartans remained unbeaten in Evergreen 1A play with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-21) win over Hoquiam.
“I am so excited for the girls and how well they are playing. We are improving every game,” said coach Jenn LeDuke.
Julia Lausche led the Spartans with 24 assists and nine aces serving. Rian Peters had 10 kills and three blocks, while Chloe Leverington had nine kills and three blocks.
Britney Dean had seven kills and finished the match with an ace.
“Myah Rondeau was solid again for us in the back row with digs and coverage,” LeDuke said.
Forks (2-0, 6-2), is tied for first with Elma in the Evergreen 1A. The Spartans next play Montesano (0-2, 3-5) at home at 5:30 p.m. today.
Neah Bay 3, Clallam Bay 1
NEAH BAY — The Red Devils beat the Bruins 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-19, 25-18).
“Our serving and passing just weren’t working last night. Neah Bay played well,” said Clallam Bay coach Amanda Maines.
Girls Swimming
Bainbridge 129, Port Angeles 55
BAINBRIDGE — Going up against 3A swim and dive power Bainbridge and without Natalie Cole, who was out sick, the Roughriders swim team was outpointed 129-55.
Kiara Schmitt swam a district qualifying time on the 100 freestyle with a time of 1 minutes, 2.14 seconds. She finished second.
Felicia Che won two events — the 200 individual medley (2:25.91) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.68).
The Riders (3-1, 3-2) return to league action at 3:30 p.m. today at Kingston.
