PREP ROUNDUP: Shamp posts double-double as Port Angeles boys race past Kingston

Sequim boys beat Olympic

PORT ANGELES — Inspired by a rough night against North Kitsap, Port Angeles junior post Isaiah Shamp produced a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Roughriders in a 74-39 win over Kingston.

Shamp scored two points and fouled out with 3:44 left against the Vikings.

“He was kind of disappointed in his game with North and he came out aggressively,” coach Kasey Ulin said. “He got to the free throw-line 13 times. He was really solid for us.”

Port Angeles snapped a four-game losing skid, all of them against top competition, with the victory.

“We forced 27 turnovers, so we were able to get out in transition and get some buckets,” Ulin said.

A 14-1 second quarter provided cushion for the Riders.

Kingston rallied, hitting six 3-pointers in the third quarter, but Port Angeles cleaned things up in the fourth quarter defensively to coast to the win.

“Kingston hit eight 3’s and a lot of them were well behind the line and tough, well-defended shots,” Ulin said.

The Riders also shot well from the outside themselves.

“They zoned us up, and our ball movement was pretty good at times, and we found open shooters,” Ulin said. “Dallas [Dunning] had three 3s, Bryant Hoch had 3, and six different guys hit 3s.

Dunning also was a spark for Port Angeles.

“Dallas was great, he had 11 points, eight rebounds and six steals. He’s so long and active and he just gets up off the floor.”

Port Angeles (5-1, 7-4) hosts Sequim (3-3, 5-6) in a Rainshadow Rumble rivalry doubleheader on Tuesday.

The girls will face off at 5:15 p.m. with the boys set to follow at 7 p.m.

“I love that, I think it’s great for both towns,” Ulin said. “It’s fun to see the gym packed and it’s a fun atmosphere. I wish we would do that every year.”

KINGSTON — The Roughriders owned the offensive glass and turned the Buccaneers over 22 times in a road triumph Thursday night.

“Our goals on the night included playing our 2-3 zone more aggressively and increasing scoring on offensive rebounds,” coach Michael Poindexter said.

“We were able to do both successfully, picking up several early steals and picking up a season high 16 offensive rebounds, with 8 points directly off put-backs.”

Piper Williams scored a season-high 11 points, while Paige Mason also had 11 points and led the Riders in rebounding with eight.

“Kingston’s 2-3 zone forced us to take more 3-point shots than usual, and we made only 19-percent of those shots; however, we shot 50-percent inside the arc, led by Paige Mason’s and Piper Williams’ 67-percent shooting nights inside.”

Anna Petty hit for 10 points, including two of five 3-point shooting and led the team with six assists.

Lexie Smith also was active with eight points, eight rebounds, a team-high five steals and three assists.

Vaara added six rebounds, six steals, six assists and a blocked shot to round out her night.

Jelissa Julmist added eight points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

“Jelissa worked hard in the post and did a good job passing and playing defense for us tonight,” Julmist said.

Sammie Bacon scored nine points with seven boards and a steal down low and Libby Turella added eight points, three rebounds and a pair of steals.

“Sammie and Libby also did a great job on both sides of the court rebounding and making baskets,” Julmist said.

Point guard Hannah Bates didn’t commit a turnover and scored six points with four steals and three assists.

“Hannah did a great job running the show protecting the ball playing defense and shooting the ball,” Julmist said.
