PREP SOCCER: Port Angeles boys overcome rain, Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Angeles moved to 2-0 on the season, scoring four goals in the second half to pull away from Port Townsend 6-2 in soggy, wet conditions at Memorial Field.

The Roughriders’ Ben Schneider scored three goals, while Stuart Methner had three assists in Tuesday’s boys soccer match.

“It felt great to come together as a team. The midfield did great distributing the ball and I was just at the right place at the right time,” Schneider said.

Aldair Ramirez also had a goal for Port Angeles, set up by one of Methner’s assists and Kenny Soule had a goal, also on a Methner assist.

Port Angeles had a 2-0 lead near the end of the first half, but Port Townsend’s Ian Kjeldgaard cut the lead in half with a penalty kick goal in the 38th minute.

The Riders blew the match open between the 51st and 66th minutes, scoring four goals in 15 minutes, two of them by Schneider.

The Redhawks’ Silas DeWise closed off the scoring with a goal in the 69th minute on a penalty kick.

Port Townsend had another penalty kick that Riders goalie Lorenzo De La Torre was able to block.

Coach Chris Saari said the field deteriorated into wet and sloppy conditions as heavy rain continued through the whole match.

Saari named Schneider and Methner his offensive players of the match. Methner already has two goals and three assists this season. He picked Andrew Borde and Hollund Bailey his defensive players of the match. He named Ramirez, Soule and Fischer his transition players of the match.

Port Angeles finished with 18 shots to three for Port Townsend. Both teams had five corner kicks.

The Riders (0-0, 2-0) begin Olympic League 2A Division play at Kingston (1-0, 1-1) at 6:45 p.m. Friday.

It was the Redhawks’ (0-1) opening game of the season. Port Townsend plays an Olympic League 1A Division match at Klahowya (0-0) at 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Sequim 8, Olympic 0

BREMERTON — The Wolves swarmed the Trojans with an offensive explosion in an 8-0 season-opening Olympic League 2A Division win.

Liam Harris had a pair of goals, while Ryan Tolberd had two goals and an assist. Sean Weber had a goal and an assist, and Evan James had two assists. Spanish exchange student Hayuk Minano is a newcomer on the team and he chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Navy Thomas-Brenske, normally a goalie, had a goal, assisted by Reid Parker. Mike McAleer rounded out the scoring on an unassisted goal.

Pitching the shutout for Sequim were goalkeepers Nick Janovich and Liam Stevenson. Coach Dave Brasher said the Sequim defense wasn’t challenged much by an undermanned Olympic squad as the Trojans only managed one shot.

Brasher gave his player of the game nod not to any of the scorers, but to Addison Berg, who played defensive midfield.

“He set up a lot of stuff,” Brasher said, saying Berg played good defense and organized the Wolves’ offense all game.

Sequim (1-0, 1-0) next plays at Fife (0-1) at 4 p.m. today.
