PREP SOCCER: Roughriders shut out Olympic 2-0

OLYMPIC — Though the score looked relatively close, the Port Angeles girls soccer team dominated in a 2-0 road win over Olympic, keeping the Roughriders in the top half of the Olympic League standings

“It was actually a pretty good game,” said coach Daniel Horton. “We dominated the possession, took some great shots. We were right on their doorstep all night.”

Olympic came in to the match 1-9. The Riders peppered the Trojans’ goal with shots, but headers just missed, one shot went off a crossbar and others went just wide.

“In that part of the season with injuries and sickness, we will take a 2-0 win every night,” Horton said.

Kedryn DeScala scored both of Port Angeles’ goals, the first coming in just the second minute of the game with an assist from Lilly Ann Lancaster. The second came in the 57th minute with the assist going to Morgan Politika.

“Kedryn is our striker. She plays up top and gives us assists and goals. Last night, she really wanted to score. It was nice to see her score two goals,” Horton said.

Kennedy Rognlien earned the shutout in goal, but Horton said the Riders’ defense didn’t allow a single shot on goal. Horton said Becca Manson played great, moving from the center midfield position to the center back spot to anchor the defense.

The win put the Riders at 6-4 in league (6-5 overall), in fourth place, one game behind Kingston. Kingston still has to play unbeaten Bainbridge and the Riders will get a crack at the Bucs in their final game of the year on Oct. 29.

Port Angeles has a tough game at home at 7:15 p.m. today against North Kitsap (9-1, 10-1-1), the No. 8-ranked team in the state.

Bainbridge 3, Sequim 0

BAINBRIDGE — The Sequim girls soccer team kept league-leading and fifth-ranked Bainbridge in check much of the night in a 3-0 loss.

“I think they put up a good fight,” said coach Haley Hunsaker-Freeman. “Every single player on the team worked super hard. [Bainbridge] is super talented. They’re a first-place team for a reason.”

The Spartans scored two goals in the first half and Sequim allowed just one goal in the second half.

Hunsaker thought Amara Gonzalez played well in the center back position and Kalli Grove played well in goal. She made 12 saves on 15 shots on goal.

She said Sasha Yada played hard at forward for the Wolves and that Harper Moore on the outside back was busy with Bainbridge’s forwards all night.

“She played so hard. She was being overloaded all night and held down her side of the field,” Hunsaker-Freeman said.

Sequim (3-6, 3-6) will host Olympic (1-9, 1-10-1) at 7 p.m. today.

Vashon 5, East Jefferson 0

VASHON — The East Jefferson girls soccer team, beset by injuries and illness, played Vashon hard in a 5-0 road loss, according to coach Robert Cantley.

“We’re still not full strength,” Cantley said. He said the Rivals are down to their third-string goalkeeper as Rylie Spainhower-Oas is out with a broken finger and Akili Clevenger was sick.

Freshman Elisabeth Erickson stepped in to play goalkeeper and she did an outstanding job, Cantley said. She even stopped a penalty kick. Cantley also said captain Kay Botkin played well.

“She was everywhere at once,” he said.

The Rivals went into the half down 4-0, but allowed just one goal in the second half.

“In the second half, there was a big turnaround and we played a lot better. They played the way I’ve wanted them to play,” Cantley said.

East Jefferson (0-3-0, 1-9-1) next plays at home in Port Townsend against Life Christian (1-3-0, 3-5-1) at 5:30 p.m. today.
