SEQUIM — The Sequim boys soccer team overcame torrential rainfall and a physical North Mason team to prevail 3-0, improving to 2-1 on the season.
“North Mason came out physical as we expected,” said coach Dave Breckenridge. “Our boys kept their cool and weathered the storm — pardon the pun. The weather was very rough the majority of the first half. The ball was moving fast and touches were off on both sides because of it.”
Breckenridge said that with Sequim having the only grass pitch in the league, the Wolves have a slight advantage in home matches in poor weather such as Friday night’s downpour.
“The ball bounces different and tends to sit more than on traditional turf pitches,” he said.
The Wolves got their first goal on a through ball from Josh Alcaraz to Nico Musso.
“The goal didn’t seem to faze the North Mason players. They just continued to put the pressure on. It was like a swarm of bees. As soon as one of our players had the ball, they had two players minimum on them applying pressure,” Breckenridge said.
Breckenridge said the team talked about controlling tempo more and working to get more than a one-goal lead. The Wolves responded with a goal early in the second half by Alcaraz.
The game grew more physical after Alcaraz’s goal, but Breckenridge said the Sequim players kept their cool and were able to get an insurance goal with 15 minutes left in the goal on a solo effort by Finn Braaten on a shot to the upper left corner of the net.
“The keeper had no chance,” Breckenridge said. “It was a hard-fought, paced match from both sides.”
Sequim (2-1, 2-1) has a tough match coming up at Bainbridge (2-0, 4-0) on Tuesday.
Bainbridge 4, Port Angeles 1
PORT ANGELES — Playing its first home game of the year, the Port Angeles boys soccer team faced one of the top 2A teams in the state in Bainbridge, falling to the powerful Spartans 4-1.
The Spartans scored three goals in a 10-minute stretch in the first half, but otherwise, the Riders played them evenly.
“Bainbridge controlled possession and kept the ball in the Riders half for the majority of the first half. The Spartans earned eight corner kicks in the first half and the Riders failed to clear the ball from the near post in the 25th minute on a corner kick,” said coach Chris Saari. “The ball went past the near post and Rider goalie Gus Halberg. It was an avoidable goal but the Spartans pressure had finally broken through the Port Angeles defense.”
Bainbridge scored a couple more quick goals in the 33rd and 35th minutes to take a 3-0 lead.
“Port Angeles held the Spartans scoreless for the majority of the second half and notched a goal for themselves in the 58th minute after earning a corner kick. Kanyon Anderson served the ball to the far post on the corner and Rider defender Grant Butterworth elevated thru the traffic and smashed home a beautiful header goal,” Saari said.
It was Butterworth’s first varsity goal.
“The Riders got a spark from the goal and were putting more pressure on the Spartans in the last 20 minutes of the game. Port Angeles was unable to score again and the Spartans added an insurance goal late in the 78th minute,” Saari said. “Despite the loss the Riders left the game feeling good about how they were able to compete against one of the better teams in the state at the 2A level.”
Saari said Halberg “put on a show” in goal.
“He kept the Riders in the game and flashed with some amazing athleticism and saves. He was snaring dangerous crosses in traffic, punching away loose balls and making it difficult for Bainbridge to score,” Saari said.
Saari named Halberg and Taihvan Lyle the defensive players of the match, Butterworth the offensive player of the match for his top-notch header and Anderson the transition player of the match.
Port Angeles (2-1, 3-2) looks to bounce back Tuesday at Olympic (0-2, 0-2).
East Jefferson 2, Olympic 0 East Jefferson 1, Seattle Christian 1
PORT TOWNSEND — The East Jefferson boys soccer team picked up its second win this season over a 2A opponent, blanking Olympic 2-0 on Saturday.
“The boys are ecstatic” said coach Logan Stegner. “They put in a lot of offseason work and it’s cool to see that them experiencing the positives from that.”
The victory, plus a 1-1 draw on the road Friday against Seattle Christian keeps the Rivals’ record unbeaten at 4-0-1.
Goalkeeper Emilio Lopez earned the shutout against the Trojans, while the goals were scored by Rene Martin, assisted by Alan Morales, and Simon Barlow unassisted. Both goals were in the first 30 minutes of the match as the Rivals kept the Trojans at bay the rest of the game.
Stegner said Seattle Christian is a good, young team that is well-structured. Against the Warriors, the Rivals scored early on a corner kick by Morales that Crosby Pray knocked in. Stegner said Seattle Christian came out aggressive in the second half and were outhustling the Rivals. The Warriors were able to tie it with about 25 minutes left.
The Rivals had a chance for a last-minute victory, but a good shot in the final minute went off the crossbar.
Though Seattle Christian is in the Nisqually League, this was not a league game. East Jefferson (4-0-1) next plays at Vashon (1-0-2) on Thursday.
