PREP SOFTBALL: Port Angeles No. 1 seed and opens district tournament against Highline

OLYMPIA — The Port Angeles softball team picked up a well-earned No. 1 seed in the bidistrict tournament that begins Friday.

The Roughriders, co-champions of the Olympic League, won a tiebreaker with North Kitsap Monday to earn the league’s top seed. The Riders, 18-2 overall, are also ranked No. 2 in the state in ratings percentage index.

Port Angeles will play No. 8 seed Highline at noon Friday at the Regional Sports Complex in Lacey. If the Riders win, they qualify for the state 2A tournament. Highline, 13-6 overall, finished second in the KingCo 2A league.

The Roughriders’ second game Friday will be at 2 p.m. if they lose or 4 p.m. if they win. North Kitsap is a No. 4 seed, playing No. 5 Fife, so it’s very possible the Riders will face the Vikings for the fourth time this season in the second round.

Consolation finals, the third-place game and championship games are all Saturday.

The state 2A tournament begins May 24 at Carlon Park in Selah.
