PREP SOFTBALL: Quilcene gets best of Port Townsend in nonleague win

PORT TOWNSEND — The Quilcene softball team stayed unbeaten on the season after dropping its Class 1A neighbor to the north, Port Townsend, 10-0.

“I thought our defense played exceptionally well today,” Rangers coach Mark Thompson said of Monday’s game.

“Port Townsend put the ball in play and we did what we needed to do.”

Sammy Rae opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, as Quilcene pushed to a 3-0 lead after the first frame.

Katie Bailey had a big day at the plate going 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Megan Weller added a double, a triple and two RBIs for the Rangers, who pounded out 14 hits in the game.

Rae earned the complete-game shutout on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out 10 to improve to 5-0.

“This is a great win for us,” Thompson said.

“The Redhawks are a young and improving team that will be heard from by the time the season is over.”

Port Townsend (0-1, 0-3) hosts rival Chimacum (2-2) on Thursday.

Quilcene (5-0) visits Chimacum on Friday.
